We got any musicians in here? If so;
>What instrument/s you play
>How long you've been playing for
>What type of music you play
>What experience (if any) you've had with performing for an audience
>What got you started

inb4 YOU PLAY SKIN FLUTE DON'T YOU. And, "This belongs in music", it belongs wherever the fuck I put it, thank you :)

>Flute, Piano, Bass Guitar
>7 years, 9 years, 3 years
>Whatever I feel like playing
>Recitals, concerts, marching shows/marching parades (band geek for life)
>Piano: My mom put me in it I think, Flute: It was a pretty and feminine instrument and I wanted to be in band, Bass guitar: the more obscure instrument in a band, plus I like the deep sound
User avatar #37544 to #37541 - paradoxfag (08/11/2012) [-]
Cool! (I'd love to join a band camp :P)

Flute is feminine!? :L I bought one two days ago, no one told me this!! Hahaha

Sweet, but that does suck about the lack of fellow mindsets! Were you a member of that band ya? :)

I learned drums from guitar hero.. :P

>Guitar, Piano
>Piano: 12 years, Guitar: 5
>Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Deathcore, Blues, Ska, etc.
>Just a little for piano, like recitals and shit
>Piano: My bestfriend's sister was the piano teacher and I got to hangout with him after lessons, Guitar: I thought it would be kickass.
User avatar #37372 to #37364 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Nice! And are you doing grades in piano?

Love the versatility :D

And IS it kickass? :P haha
User avatar #37411 to #37372 - theomcdwiggy (08/10/2012) [-]
Actually since I graduated high school I haven't done much with it, but I'll tend to look up tutorials on youtube. And yes it is very kickass. :3

> Euphonium, clarinet
> 4 years, 1 year
> I have played in a quintet and a quartet at the New England Conservatory where we mostly played baroque and renaissance music. I have played in a few different larger bands and orchestras where we play a variety of music from classical pieces to music soundtracks.
> I usually perform in one or two solo recitals a year. I participate in 6 or 7 large band or orchestra recitals a year. And typically one small group recital a year.
> My town has a very heavily emphasized music program, and I was encouraged to try the euphonium after trying and failing at the trumpet for a few years
User avatar #37356 to #37340 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Oh my god Euphonium you sexy bastard. That sounds fantastic though!

How is your experience playing in an orchestra? What is the atmosphere generally like?
#37358 to #37356 - toastfacekiller (08/10/2012) [-]
Its kinda unfortunate because euphoniums are gods of the band but then bitches of the orchestra. I mainly pick up trombone or tuba parts because the majority of orchestra pieces i am slated to play have no euphonium parts.
By the way, what instrument do you play?
User avatar #37361 to #37358 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
I see your predicament. This also frustrates me greatly. Hate when beautiful instruments are put to one side because they have a certain sound. It has to happen a lot of the time, but it still frustrates me :P I had a big paragraph written out to say what I've done, but I'll just do my own quiz instead :P

>Vocals, Recorder, Cajon (I play 4 percussion so I just round it to this), Guitar, Ukelele, Piano, Flute
>Properly, since about 3 years ago | 10 years ago, re-visited for 2 years, haven't played for 1 | 2 years | 18 months | 1 year | 2 years | BOUGHT YESTERDAY (Hahaha doesn't count as "playing" it but I fuckin love it so i'm mentioning it anyways :P)
>On vocals, I generally sing acoustic music (Pop Indie) or wherever my vocal chords will stretch. And well, I play whatever on the rest (lazy)
>Sang with a few choirs at shows, played recorder at a couple shows. Played around 50+ gigs. (including open mics)
>My self-loathing at not being able to play any instrument.

I know, I haven't been playing most of these very long. But I have Aspergers. And for those of you who don't know it, in this case all you need to know is that I can learn things at kind of an insane speed, though i'll be genuinely obsessive about it for months.

FUCK. This post is really long. I just love talking about music, even when it's just myself, so sorry...

damn dude, you do a lot. since you mentioned the recorder, do you happen to know about aldo abreu? i met him at a camp this summer, and hes insanely good at the recorder.
User avatar #37369 to #37365 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Haha, no sir I do not! I've never actually touched the internet when it came to recorder, so i'm in the dark about anything else out there :)

But seriously i'd love to hear that :O When people stereo-type ANY instrument as a kiddy's instrument it does anger me because it's an INSTRUMENT and there is no kiddy part about an instrument. If you get me? Haha. Well i'm sure this guy you're talking about would shut anyone up dissing the recorder :P

>Guitar, Trumpet, Bass, Ocarina
>6, 6, 4, and 5 years, respectively
>Ska, punk, folk, jazz
>I was only backing vocals, but often I would be more active on stage than our singer.
>I don't have the damnedest idea. I just like music.
User avatar #37352 to #37336 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Sick! Any footage around? :)
User avatar #37355 to #37352 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
Not unless one of our very small bar gigs was recorded on a cell phone and uploaded to the nether reaches of youtube somewhere. Also we broke up a long time ago because 2 of us (myself included) had to move away. It was fun though because we got into bars at like 16 to play shows.
User avatar #37357 to #37355 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Sure sounds like a good laugh anyways :) Ever consider just recording a solo cover? I love to watch them haha :P
User avatar #37360 to #37357 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
I not too great at guitar to do any solo work. I mean when I'm in a band, it's mostly just chords and stuff with a small solo or two to fill up the song. I'm not really good enough to hold my own by myself, like those guys who can do like 10 minutes of pure soloing. But if I start/join a new band in college, I'll put some videos up.
User avatar #37362 to #37360 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Oh I get you! An instrumentalist :) Do you play any classical? That'd be worth uploading solo-wise!

And yes, you definitely should :D Videos are the BEST way to improve :D (Next to performing live)
User avatar #37363 to #37362 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
I play some classical on Trumpet but I much prefer jazz.
User avatar #37366 to #37363 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Oh great! My grandad actually is the trumpet player in the Cork City Jazz Band, so I've grown up hearing him play it a lot, and seriously it sounds immense!

And what is it you generally do when playing jazz, cover songs? Or play around a key? Or both :P
User avatar #37367 to #37366 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
I usually improvise to a backing track. Sometimes I'll do covers, but improv is where all the fun is at.
User avatar #37371 to #37367 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Yessss, that's what I love to hear :D I was going to ask have you ever considered busking with one of your instruments, but I can see how seperately, they would be quite impractical for public use :L
User avatar #37374 to #37371 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
I used to bum around malls and play my acoustic guitar to make money to go buy new equipment and games, but eventually I realized I was stealing business from the performers who were homeless so I got a job instead.
User avatar #37379 to #37374 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Hahahaha, that has to be the funniest thing i've heard in a while :L (Not in a bad way :P)

Personally though, I wouldn't let it get to me! In Cork City the whole place is packed with buskers regardless, so if some of them are homeless, well they have to work harder for their cash and that's just the way it is here :P
User avatar #37385 to #37379 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
I just felt bad because I can play guitar moderately well, whereas most of the homeless players just started and had no idea what they were doing so I got more business.
User avatar #37391 to #37385 - paradoxfag (08/10/2012) [-]
Oh haha I see. There's no real "bad" buskers here, the homeless guys are the most experienced and often best, so the rest of us don't feel bad competing :P
User avatar #37394 to #37391 - gmarrox (08/10/2012) [-]
One or two of the guys here are amazing. One guy can do Haydn's Trumpet Concerto from memory, but nobody plays near him 'cause he gets all the money :P
