slowly burning

A conversation between my
daughter and son
Daughter: other if oxygen is poisonous and it just takes its
to WU years to kill us?
Son: Ideah pretty much. That' s why antioxidants are a big
deal. Actually oxygen oxidizes stuff in your cells, or in other
words, it' s not toxic but setting you on fire very; very slowly.
Daughter: Cool, I love fire.

It goes from sounding like gay porn, to a bunch of people coughing, to goat doing their 'baaaaa' I forget the actual name for the sound they make.

Didn't know my sound was off, but watched the whole thing because comments seemed like legitimate reactions. Realized I need sound after trying to watch a YouTube video. I'm just gonna leave this for others like me...

in order for our cells to metabolize, we require oxygen. in the eletron transport chain, oxygen must be present as it ts the final electron receptor.

You might want to keep your daughter away from:

Yep. If it is for science or for art, that more or less makes everything okay (to a point.)

Antioxidants actually don't do anything to "remove" oxygen from your body. First of all, you need oxygen to live. Second of all, antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are highly volatile particles that certain antibacterial cells in your body use to obliterate trapped invaders. These antibacterial cells do not rupture or anything, so free radicals aren't actually a problem. To give you an analogy as to what antioxidants do, imagine the least corrupt law enforcer ever, who only ever does justice (Batman, if you like). Then introduce your antioxidant, which just disarms the **** out of Batman and steals all his gadgets. Pretty much what antioxidants do from a clinically scientifically tested perspective.
#40 to #35 - Rascal (11/03/2013) [-]
That's only partially correct. The hydroxyl radical, which is used by the immune system as you mentioned, can cause unwanted damage to important macro-molecules such as proteins and DNA. And the only way to sweep up escaped hydroxyl radicals is with antioxidants (because the hydroxyl would bond randomly to any enzyme that got near it). Antioxidants simply prevent oxidation (which has nothing to with oxygen) by bonding with radicals.

This really doesn't change the fact that clinical studies (double blind, randomized placebo studies) which test for the efficacy of antioxidants in individuals at risk for cancer show that antioxidants actually slightly *increase* the risk of developing and dying from cancer. From a theoretical perspective antioxidants do some amount of good, but from a practical lens, they at best do nothing.

one of the biggest evolutionary difficulties was actually making the adaptation for organisms to withstand the higher oxygen concentrations outside of the water. Oxygen is very bad for you indeed, in a way. If you want some living proof, if you ever had a piece of skin (scab, callous) fall off, you'll notice within minutes it becomes hard and flaky. Don't know the words to describe that, but that's what oxygen actually does to your skin! Also why we our skin cells need to be changed so often!

Sorry, not such a funny post but hoped to interest people

outside of water? Oh you mean free oxygen, yeah, it's a poison to organic molecules. For a second I thought you meant free oxygen in the atmosphere as opposed to oxygen dissolved in water.

except free radicals and anti-oxidants are confirmed shenanigans.
#37 to #30 - Rascal (11/03/2013) [-]
They aren't shenanigans from the point of view of Chemistry. Free radicals are just small molecules with an outer orbital only half filled; they tend to be extremely reactive, and even a minor change in a protein or essential chemical in your body can render them completely useless. Antioxidants just pick up the radicals so they don't **** **** up.
User avatar #89 to #37 - monswine (11/04/2013) [-]
Yes, free radicals and anti-oxidants are things that exist but they are not things that have been proven to affect human health.

We're just like a car engine, we have internal combustion, that eventually will kill us.
