Makes me wonder if it's possible for someone to stay alive with even half of their face burned that bad

Yes it's possible, but it's hard to not die of some infection.

You could live without any of your skin if it was all peeled off, but staying alive without getting an infection is the real problem.

Not picture of the burns themselves but this is what his face is as the moment after skin grapts. He suffered 4th degree burns (which "may involve muscle, fascia, or bone.") after touching a powerline on a cherry picker. One of the doctors said that just a skull was left "What he was left with is truly a skeleton or skull on top of a body," .

That is both sad and horrifying. He has no nose, no eyes, no feeling. Just a mouth. Preferable to being dead though.

This is him now, after his face transplant. I put together two picture so you can with and without glasses.

That's an improvement. He almost looks like a regular blind guy now. Still pretty horrible what happened to him though - their description "was a skull on a body"

Yeah, he's regained his sense of smell, obviously he's still blind but there's not much they can do about that. But I think he can smile and move more of his face now which is all he really wanted.

He's lucky to live in a time when we can do this.

Probably, since someone got a 6-inch spike driven through their head, and they were fine for 6 months (Or something like 6 months)
