User avatar #57 to #43 - lifesavers ONLINE (07/23/2014) [-]
The gif's color depth is 8-bit, but everyone forgets that the NES's CPU was 8-bit, not the graphics. The graphics had a color palette with 54 colors, rather than 256 like an 8-bit image. Moreover, the NES has a total of 2kb of VRAM, whereas the image is over 100kb.

So technically it's 8-bit, even though it isn't terribly reminiscent of early image processing.

Its rather fun, it has that good old Nostalgia vibe to it without shoving it in your face too much. I can't remember who / where said it but they said it was like an inbreed of many old games.

It has Elements from Megaman and mario. But its mostly a platformer if anything.

Is it worth 15$? It sure is, Go buy it

A quick gaze on Metacritic, forums or conversing with anyone that knows about Final Fantasy in the slightest could have told you that.

While being a Final Fantasy game has certainly influenced the initial popularity of the game, it certainly has gained it's fair share of die-hard fans.

Most indie devs just pretend they're intentionally giving the game a 'retro look', but in reality they just do not have the cash or skill to come up with anything better
User avatar #200 to #149 - fauxshores ONLINE (07/23/2014) [-]
As a guy working on his own indie title while going through school, I can say this is pretty much correct. Programmers are not often artists, and when they can handle some of the art its usually just one aspect of it. Its really uncommon to see high quality programming, textures, animation, sound and the like all from one or two guys. So usually it becomes a smaller project that is stylized to make it work. Im shooting for a 16 bit Metroidesque sidescroller and even that will be pushing my artistic abilty.

I dig it. What's the story? How's the gameplay?
#166 to #161 - nintendoexplain (07/23/2014) [-]
The gameplay is as if the GBC Zelda games controlled with the mouse.
Imagine the DS Zelda's, if you've played them, but for PC.

Left mouse button does the movement, you move toward the cursor. The Right mouse button uses your equipped item, (The Sword and Bow are pictured), the mouse wheel cycles your items.

It's open world, so similar to the original Legend of Zelda in terms of "I'm playing the game now, wtf do I do?"

For the story I'm trying to come up with something you might see in a Studio Ghibli movie, or a Team Ico game.

I feel like there are too many "retro" and "survival" games on the indie market right now. Indie developers are running out of ideas. There are good games that did things right and add amazing mechanics and other things but some just add 8-16 bit graphics and slap on the survival genre or platform genre and done. Go on steam right now and check out the indie games. Originality at max.
/rant ends here

User avatar #32 - organiclead (07/23/2014) [-]
Depends how retro we're going. The first one looks closer to King's Quest era graphics while the second looks closer to Final Fantasy 2 era graphics. Granted, older doesn't automatically mean better. See: FMV games.

I have a slight preference for more stylized games like Earhtbound or FTL over super hard core realistic looking ones though and hate the fact people tend to associate a simple style with bad graphics.
