In the near future an international effort was made to colonize and terraform the planet Mars into a sovereign state belonging to the UN. The mission brought together scientists and engineers from all countries of the world to work towards the effort with an unlimited budget. Over the course of 150 years Mars is terraformed to a habitable level and the population consists of the generations of thousands of physicists, chemists, and engineers.

They became self sufficient and decided to declare independence from the UN, knowing an interplanetary war would be too costly for Earth. So, with the information of all of Earth's history of mistakes and triumphs, they gather their council to begin forming their new government. WHAT IS THEIR NEW SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT?

Certainly a technocracy. Personally, I think that that would be best on Earth too, but since the native population would have been made up of scientists anyways, it would be an intelligent place. But I'm sure that some Americans, assuming our nation still existed, would try to claim it as a state...

If it's a small population, a Democracy would be sufficient, especially when the population is comprised of knowledgeable individuals.

Yes, that work for them, but would it work for hundreds of years in the future?

Or maybe they should start out with a democratic republic so they don't have to worry about figuring out a point where to switch. But hopefully they will have learned their lesson. They need to keep the government doing its job, which is to establish personal rights and protect those rights from others and use an adequate system of checks and balances to make sure they respect our rights as well. They need to keep government seperate from religion, because that causes nothing but problems. They need to not interfere with the free market, with the exception of safety regulations, and they need to not let businesses have the same rights citizens do nor should they let business participate in politics because that gives people with money more voice than they are supposed to have.

Interesting question though.
