Requirements should be:
no serious crimes on your criminal record
pass an interview with immigration officials on why you want to move
unemployment benefits only valid for six months/until you find a job

upon visa expiry:
re-conduct interview, this time pertaining to your actions during time in-country

green card:
one year in US; no serious crimes committed
2/3rds of aforementioned year spent in US

naturalization:
three years with green card
no time spent in jail
conduct interview on why you want to become American

that's my ideal immigration system

on what to do right now; make legal immigration easier, give illegals easy way to green card (e.g. an interview on why you are in the US and time in US, proof of said time, background check), deport those who fail to meet associated simple requirements.

If we every kid born on vacation in the US is a citizen, why can't people who want America enough to put everything on the line come there without being subjected to a process comparable to torture?

How about people that do commit crimes while here? Put them in jail, or deport?

Jail.

Then an evaluation on whether to deport or serve US time and be released with a more severe than usual parole.

Also. Reset on green card time requirements should deportation be ruled out. So another year without time spent in jail.

Seems like it would work. The current U.S. immigration/deportation system and enforcement piss me off.

Simply put, make it easier for people to immigrate legally, but for any immigration policy to make any sense you absolutely must enforce immigration laws. No amnesty.

allow it for anyone who has (potential) employment in the country they are immigrating to, for as long as they can keep the job, and long enough for them to find a new job if they are so inclined after that, just do not provide any benefits of the state unless they are paying taxes

Not bad. I would in the current situation, deport all illegals, except for those that were born here, are over 18 and have no criminal record. Then if you want to get in to the U.S. legally, you may through the regular channels. Then an immigration policy such as yours.
