This the stuff of nightmares. This image haunted me throughout my childhood, when all the other kids ran around chasing butterflies all i could do was watch in horror of their ignorance. They hadn't seen what i had.

Anyone have that sad-ass bear picture from that one boxerhockey comic?

I need it right about now.

Attacus atlas, sweet.

They are commonly available in the pet trade, and fairly undemanding to keep. Wanted to get some myself for ages but i dont have the right foodplant local.

I remember when I was younger I would go outside in my backyard and find different kinds of butterflies and moths. I find that a lot of people have unnatural hate for anything with six or eight legs. I really wish people didn't see them as disgusting bugs.
User avatar #103 to #100 - sonicqueen (02/19/2014) [-]
Well, I only hate butterflies and moths really. It's their wings that creep me out. But I actually love other things like spiders or centipedes. Or other insects that most people would be afraid of. I don't get that logic at all. I do know that there's a word for the fear of moths though, so that must mean that I'm not the only one. Which makes me feel less of a horrible person xD

I like them but caterpillars and maggot-like bugs creep me out

One time, at caterpillar season, we collected a bunch of silk worm thingies like we usually did and brought them inside to watch them grow. They escaped, though, and were all over, mostly swarming on a paper towel roll and eating through it

FUN FACT!

In the cocoon, the caterpillar dissolves into a pool of stem cells and them rebuilds itself.

User avatar #21 to #18 - masdercheef (02/19/2014) [-]
The funny thing is, if you want to be technical about it, it's completely relevant since the character's name is Chrysalis. With that being said, it's also irrelevant because this is not pony content.

Which is exactly the reason people are thumb-warring, I guess.
User avatar #31 to #21 - bluenebula (02/19/2014) [-]
When you think about it, the anime, LoK, and Billy and Mandy images are only relevant though their reactions. People overlook how irrelevant their fandoms are to others. As someone who doesn't watch ponies or LoK, I find them both to be equally as irrelevant on a post like this.

(I'm not saying I dislike either. I just don't watch them)
#44 to #12 - willys (02/19/2014) [-]
Well I'm here to be the buzzkill on your fun fact...

It's only a cocoon if it's a moth, when it's a butterfly it's called a chrysalis and any other insect it's just a pupa. Also, they don't dissolve into stem cells. The segments of a caterpillar remain intact and in fact the butterfly has the same number of segments it's just that the outer cells are repurposed. Also, y'know, wings grow.

If I could get in contact with my teacher, I could get the pictures I did not really have a "pet butterfly" but I do have an amazing story.
My second grade class had a large container for caterpillars and there was about 6 or 7 of them in the container. And we watched the caterpillars go through the whole metamorphosis. The butterflies the caterpillars turned out to be were painted lady butterflies.
The butterflies were ready to be released into the world so everyone in my class went outside to watch them fly off. We opened the lid to their container but they would not go. My teacher Mrs. K-her name started with a K- looked in the container and said their wings need to dry before they can take off. So she said only a few students can hold the butterflies on their fingers.
One kid said to the entire class to not do it because the legs are gross or something and the class, being as gullible as a child can be, did not want to touch them. I absolutely love butterflies so I wanted to hold one. Mrs. K said to put in my hand and one will crawl on it. I put my hand in the container and not one but two climbed on my hand, flapping their wings to let them airdry. This shocked Mrs. K and so I put in my other hand and three more climbed on my other hand. Mrs. K hand the other one or two on her hand and we watched them flap their wings. Everyone in my class freaked out because of us just calmly holding these butterflies on our hands.
Then the most amazing thing happened. The butterflies' wings had dried completely and I got to watch and feel them take off from my hands. I was saddened that they had left me but I was happy to hold so many of them.
It may not have been a pleasant experience for everybody to witness those butterflies take off from my hands, but it is something I will always remember.
