I grew up in England. I remember the year I left, the temp got to 96F and the roads started melting.

Literally melting to your ******* tires as you drive down the road.

that happened this year too so they put rocksalt everywhere like it was going to freeze

Didn't the Dutch sail through London with our warships whilst England was at war with the Dutch?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Anglo-Dutch_War

To be fair, that's pretty ******* humiliating for the apparently decisively victorious British Empire.

All nations have their moments of victory and their moments of humiliation. No country is without either. The British Empire just had a decent run for a while, most of that time. And that's that. You can be proud of your accomplishments, but don't pretend like the country, of which to be a part you need to be almost a century old by now, was perfect in every respect.

It wasn't by far: It committed slavery, mass-murder, annexation and many crimes of war. And not all accomplishments are necessarily worthy of respect either (Annexation of India), and those that are, are not all respect worthy in all their aspects (Bombing of German towns in WW2). If the British Empire was perfect, all of the Commonwealth Realm, India, the United States and all other nations who have separated from the British Empire wouldn't have separated.

Just adding a secondary opinion on the matter. Obviously I recognize and respect the actions of the British Empire worthy of appreciation. But I wanted to balance the discussion here, and therefore I did.

We could've built another house if we wanted to.

But we chose not to because what happened wasn't significant enough to make us give a **** .

Uum.. what?
How.. can you even start to think...

OK, lets look at this.

US Objectives:
Annex Canada
Stop impressment of US sailors into Royal Navy

British Objective:
Get US to **** off and leave us (and our colonies) alone

End result:
US Capital sacked
Impressment stopped (not due to war, but due to defeat of Napoleon making it redundant)
Canada not annexed by US
US still intact and able to trade with Britain

The US failed its primary objective, utterly, and the British achieved theirs.
How on earth could you ever call that a US victory?
User avatar #133 to #127 - aviatrix (11/10/2013) [-]
Okay I was misinformed. I thought the primary US objective was to stop the impressment. But further research shows that this was not, in fact the case. I yield sir.

Although the objectives may not have been achieved.

But you could really argue both ways. Although we may have not of gained more land through Canada. But we did take New Orleans which opened us up to an easier westard expansion.

In the end both parties won some **** and lost some **** .
