Sounds crazy doesn't it? But wool is a natural fiber made from protein strands. Whereas other natural materials, like cotton, are instead made from cellulose or man made fibers like nylon which melt. This makes wool one of the most flame resistant of clothing materials, with a very high ignition temperature, and when it finally reaches that temperature it is very easy to extinguish just by patting it out.

Try it out, go find something that has been knitted from pure wool and try setting fire to it.
