1: Knees above hips = good depth
2: Head is tucked forward creating a neutral spine position
3: Heels are properly planted to create strongest pushing foundation
4: Chest and shoulders aren't being rounded forward into kyphosis

10/10 squat

"Knees above hips = good depth"
Don't go ass to the grass, unless you want knee problems later in life.
User avatar #25 to #24 - studbeefpile (03/29/2014) [-]
That's some next-level ignorance right there.

Full squats are actually much better for joint health as long as you don't try to quickly shoot down and bounce out of the bottom position. Half squats are actually far worse for your joints because they don't allow for the full stretch of the tendons and joint. I used to do half squats and I started having knee pain, but as I switched over to full squats the knee pain went away.

A lot of people do atg squats wrong. It's not the squat's fault, it's the practitioner's fault.

you best check yourself before you shrek yourself.
User avatar #107 to #25 - mutzaki ONLINE (03/30/2014) [-]
All we can do is agree to disagree, because we obviously have differing sources. It's not like this is the first time it's been argued over whether or not to go past parallel. But, if it's of any interest to you, when I was doing ass to the grass, my knees hurt and were making unpleasant sounds. Ever since I've stopped at parallel, that hasn't been an issue.
User avatar #113 to #107 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
You were probably rocketing down into the hole trying to take advantage of the Myotatic Reaction. When you stop at parallel you're forced to slow down as you get there to avoid going past parallel, so you eliminate the forced pressure on the joint. Parallel squatting isn't bad, but half squatting will ******* rek you.

Also, I'm not a random keyboard warrior, I'm a competitive powerlifter.
User avatar #115 to #113 - mutzaki ONLINE (03/30/2014) [-]
Then you should know just how common it is for powerlifters to wear out and damage their knees later in life. Part of it is reckless form that will achieve results for their purpose, but isn't always very healthy.
User avatar #119 to #115 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
This will be the third time I say that most people make the mistake of rocketing into the hole to take advantage of the stretch reflex, and that that's wrong, but deep squatting isnt. Listen pls.
User avatar #260 to #119 - mutzaki ONLINE (03/30/2014) [-]
Except that I wasn't rocketing into any holes when I was squatting deep and feeling joint pain. I was using correct form--well, as correct as you could when doing ass to the grass.

I'm sorry, but you're far from a reliable source, and I have no reason to blindly trust you. Especially when every other source I've checked on this, including the words of numerous personal trainers, all say the opposite.

What I think, is that you've gotten your information from other powerlifters, who obviously always go past parallel. And powerlifters just happen to be some of the worst people to get advice from about lifting safely. They're not looking for safety. They're looking for results. Just the fact that they use such ridiculous weight and go for ~3 reps should really be a prime example of this.
User avatar #264 to #260 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
I'm a more reliable source than you are.

Also, for the record, becoming a "certified personal trainer" requires some foolish 2 day course or something like that. Most personal trainers will also tell you to bench with the bar aligned with your shoulders, and that you shouldn't touch your chest, and that **** will cause major injuries.
User avatar #265 to #264 - mutzaki ONLINE (03/30/2014) [-]
You're not, no.

Ah, yes, the tucked in elbows while benching. I don't have a problem with that form. It apparently gives you more power, and is necessary for heavier weights, unless you want injury. However, elbows outwards is the standard, and is fine for more manageable weights.
User avatar #266 to #265 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
Elbows out puts the stress on the shoulder joint instead of the chest muscle, it's just never a good idea.

I think I know what you might've been doing with squats before. It's possible that you were only breaking at the knees, and not using your hips at all, which would cause pain, because it's an improper way to go to depth.

All I know is that I used to have joint pain from half squats, and now I dont. Also, Jonnie Candito can full squat 550, and he doesn't have any knee problems, and neither do most powerlifters who know what they're doing.
User avatar #268 to #266 - mutzaki ONLINE (03/30/2014) [-]
Nope, I didn't do that. I engaged my hips.

Which is why we can't trust individual examples, and have to look at a bigger picture. You say "most powerlifters," which implies you know most powerlifters on a level where you'd know whether or not they had joint problems.
Again, all we can do is agree to disagree. We're obviously not getting anywhere with this.
User avatar #275 to #268 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
Things can definitely be different for different people, I don't deny that, however you're the one who said going past parallel was bad period. Really the only person you're arguing at this point is yourself.
#136 to #119 - anon (03/30/2014) [-]
so when you're squatting and going deep not necessarily atg, you should do it in a controlled manner? i just wanna take care of my joints i dont really want them to be an issue when i'm older
User avatar #137 to #136 - studbeefpile (03/30/2014) [-]
That's it bro. Just be controlled (controlled doesn't necessarily mean slow) on the decent, and don't max out every freaking workout. Do that, and you'll be just fine.

No, you don't know, because I don't complain about it, because everyone here has the right to post what the **** they want. i lift too. and my way works pretty damn well and every now and then you get someone at the gym who tries to tell you how to do a workout. its ******* annoying even though its wrong cause i went to school for 2 of 4 years taking strength and conditioning classes. then i gotta deal with it on FJ
#291 to #289 - studbeefpile (04/04/2014) [-]
Oh, okay then. The vast majority of the time someone says something like what you said it's because they're a fatass who doesn't like hearing about fitness related stuff because it just reminds them of their own situation.

See, I'm a competitive Powerlifter, so I know my **** when it comes to lifting as well. I also study muscular biology/joint and posture rehab, and have already done successful work despite only being 17. So yeah.

I snapped at you because I thought you were another one of those guys who hates everyone that lifts for no reason.

Anyway, what are you hitting up on the big three? Right now I have a 250lb bench w/pause, a 365lb squat, and a 430lb deadlift (not deadlifting 430 in picture, its unrelated).
User avatar #292 to #291 - koolkidkonnor (04/04/2014) [-]
dead lifts, squats, and other leg workouts i am not able to do because of tendinitis in my knees. i have to do elliptical for my legs. but my max for benching is 225. or at least it was before i caught mono. ill be going back to the gym next week. this virus makes you week so im not expecting to be able to do a lot of weight when i got back :/

that actually happens occasionally. the gay guy is attracted to the masculine actions/features of the girl, and the lesbian is attracted to the gay's feminine actions/looks. I dont know how often it turns into a full blown relationship, but I have heard of brief flings before. The more you know.
