I know this is a joke, i also love this episode of spongebob but it still rustles my jimmies

the only people who hate popes solely because they're catholic are not atheists, they're assholes. and i know this picture's not a jab at atheists as a whole, but it's what i'm inferring from the fact that it's specifically asking atheists

sorry i took this so seriously but i had to let it out. also i'm not even an atheist

It amuses me when non-Christians who hate Roman Catholicism for taking principled stands against abortion or homosexuality smugly lecture believers about what it means to be a "real Christian."

The point of being the pope is not to win popularity contests, but to act as the loyal guardian of the Catholic faith and doctrine, and to serve the world with love. If Francis can pull that off and make the irreligious youth of the world love him, and maybe give a more respectful hearing to the teachings of the Church, great. But if they love him because they think he's just Oprah or Ellen DeGeneres with a cooler hat, here to make you feel good about yourself without offending anybody by talking about sin and repentance... that's not a win for the Church, it's a loss.

I like what you say about the Pope, But I suggest you read "Mere Christianity". That is the very basics and essence of Christianity because of the honesty of the author.
User avatar #153 to #22 - hanabro (11/11/2013) [-]
The real victory isn't sticking with the old ways, but updating your beliefs to fit in with a modern time.

If this Pope didn't start fixing **** , Christianity would have continued to die out. Now, it has a damn chance.
User avatar #474 to #153 - rageisfunny (11/11/2013) [-]
He hasn't changed any of the doctrines of the Catholic Church.
User avatar #500 to #474 - hanabro (11/11/2013) [-]
Yes, because the catholic church has always been staunch believers that everybody of all religions are free to go to heaven, and that women are equal to men when it comes to being clergy.

If he hadn't changed anything, he wouldn't be so goddamn awesome.
User avatar #565 to #500 - rageisfunny (11/12/2013) [-]
Yea, the Church has believed that just because you aren't Catholic doesn't mean you aren't going to heaven. And he hasn't said women can become clergy.

You've got a fair point, actually.
I suppose the reason I like him is because he seems like a great person. He doesn't seem to be the one to to do this for publicity, or for any reason other than doing it. He's just helping out the community, it seems like, and for that I respect him.
But I understand what you mean, and that is a very valid point. Thank you.

I don't believe in higher power, but I must say that, if you know what to take out of bible, its good moral codex. John Paul II was in my opinion great pope. And Francis seems to be similar case. If he'll take Christianity from "Love your neighbor as yourself." side and not "Everything is a sin." he will have my respect.

It's easier to base a personal code of conduct or something along those lines on an already existing document or... well, any form of record, really... than to formulate a self-sufficient one. Even if it's the same one, you feel more confident if it's based on something that already exists. It's a subconscious thing.

Lemme tell you why i both love this dude for being one of the histories best people, but lemme also explain to you why just that makes me sad.

Malcom X - Human rights activist and Muslim minister. Also wanted to bring racial equality.
Shot in the ******* head and chest multiple times. By his own people.

John Lennon - Wanted to bring love and peace to the world through many songs.
Shot in the ******* head. By a fan.

John F. Kennedy - Loved by all and very well known as being the most popular president of the 20th century.
Shot in the back of the ******* head.

Martin Luther King Jr. - Famous for his African American civil rights movements
Shot in the ******* head and smashed his spine to pieces.

It isn't good...and i don't like it.....
Pope Francis - Loved by everyone for being a loving christian. Told his advisers to sell their Mercedez and give the money to the poor.

But i don't think Pope Francis will see the 2020's......

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Malcolm X a black supremacist? I had always heard he was against desegregation in favor of making blacks the dominant race.
User avatar #189 to #151 - fuckberries (11/11/2013) [-]
for most of his life he was more aggressive and violent until his last years of life where he turned peaceful after he made a trip to the holy land and realized what he was doing was wrong.
#186 to #151 - angelusprimus (11/11/2013) [-]
He grew up in jim crow south. Then met up with "nation of islam" people and got taught that white people are the devil.
So he became a militant black supremacist, for a while.
Then he just got sick of it all and went to pilgirimage to Mecca, and met a lot of real muslim, not nation of islam assholes, and came back and started to preach unity and peace and equality.
So they killed him.
Martin Luther King was killed by white supremacist, and Malcom X by black supremacists. Because racists are assholes no matter what color.

Well he's going to have a hard time to try to do it. Real atheists or agnostic atheists don't judge a person's beliefs, but their actions and how they use their beliefs to affect others.

Pope Francis isn't just a Christian I can respect, he's a saintly figure which DESERVES respect, his title is irrelevant to me. He's following in the ways of Christ's teachings, and not acting like an old testament douchebag like some previous popes that were about just as bad as medieval kings.

Image is Pope Francis to all the zealots.

Some people seem confused about this. The pope represents the leader of the catholic faith not the leader of all Christians. The catholic church is a more old fashioned sect of Christianity that puts more importance on Mary and the saints than other sects of Christianity. Think of Christianity as a category and catholic as a sub category, and all Christians can fit in a sub category they just don't always claim one if it isn't that important.
