Man I'm so weak I wouldn't be able to pull myself up like that. It looks like it takes effort.

Something tells me that this was taken in San Francisco. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

San Francisco on a day without overcast is pretty rare.

I initially thought this picture might be in Pismo, actually.
User avatar #49 to #29 - kanatana (12/02/2013) [-]
Yeah, you may be right. I lived on Treasure Island for a while, took a while to get used to the weather in the city.

I like how all the cars are parked correctly, with their wheels turned so if the handbrake failed, the front tire would roll to the kurb and would not roll into traffic, or straight down into another car.

What considerate drivers people are in San Francisco.

na mate. an englishman can kill an irishman with a bow and arrow inside the city walls of edinbourgh/glasgow. thats wot i heard
User avatar #90 to #60 - TheHon (12/02/2013) [-]
There are loopholes to old laws. The San Fran law isn't some weird old law from 200 years ago... if you're parked on a hill you are required by law to park safely. Stop comparing these things. This entire thread has been blown out of proportion. Kids these days...

Not that van across the street
#61 to #59 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/02/2013) [-]
.. Sorry but it is.

If it rolls down the hill, the tires will roll into the kurb.
User avatar #63 to #61 - longboarders (12/02/2013) [-]
it looks like it would back into the street, though. Does the front, right wheel hit the curb in order to stop it? PS: Are you Canadian?
#73 to #63 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/02/2013) [-]
No, I'm British.

Downhill, not the way the van is facing.
If it rolled downhill, the right tire will roll a few CM to hit the curb, and yes completely stop the van. Gravity can't straighten out the front wheel so it won't move.
User avatar #91 to #73 - longboarders (12/02/2013) [-]
I didn't think they parked that close to the curb, but thanks for clearing that up for me. I was asking because you were so apologetic to correct me, lol.
#92 to #91 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/03/2013) [-]
LOL we are apologetic too.
User avatar #96 to #92 - longboarders (12/03/2013) [-]
Damn right, ya bloody basta'd
User avatar #64 to #61 - cormy (12/02/2013) [-]
Nope, that's actually wrong. The way he has his wheel right now would in fact make his FRONT tires roll towards the curb, but then his rear end would slowly come out. When parked uphill, you point your tires towards the curb again so that as it backs up, the rear tires get pushed against the curb and it has no chance of rolling backwards.
User avatar #72 to #64 - Aleafe (12/02/2013) [-]
im a youngster who completed driveres ed recently and universilly parked uphill on the right side is the only time ou point your wheels towoard the road. im looking at the handbook now
User avatar #76 to #72 - cormy (12/02/2013) [-]
I know what the handbook says though it never made any sense to me. It does say that if there isn't a curb you should be pointing away from the road so that your car rolls off but I don't see why that shouldn't be used with or without the curb.
User avatar #77 to #76 - Aleafe (12/02/2013) [-]
so you wont hit the car behind you. just the speeding passerbys

#71 to #64 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/02/2013) [-]
If it rolls down the hill, his front wheel will roll 10 cm before hitting the curb and bring the vehicle to a complete stop. If it was the other way, the read wheels would be in a fixed position and be allowed to roll for a longer distance, gradually straightening out the front wheels (not enough to make it go far, but that's because there is a car there to crash into).
User avatar #74 to #71 - cormy (12/02/2013) [-]
What do you mean the rear tires would be in a fixed position?
Pointed towards the curb, the front end would come out like 10 cm just like in your case, except the rear wheels would be pressed up against the curb instead of the front ones, preventing it from going into traffic even if someone bumped into it slightly.
In the case where you point away from the curb, as your front end swings in towads the curb, the rear gets pointed away from it and so you can roll into traffic if the pressure of the front tires again the curb aren't enough to hold it there for whatever reason.
#78 to #74 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/02/2013) [-]
If you point your front wheels into traffic, you will travel a total of 5cm (not an accurate figure, just to demonstrate), as the front wheel will be very close to the curb and will make contact almost instantly to stop any further movement. the rear of the car will move out 10cm (fake figure).

If you point them toward the curb, you are waiting for the car to move a fair distance backwards. the wheels at the rear are straight and are more like 30cm from the curb. by the time they hit the curb the front will be out by a meter and the left side rear corner will be in the car behinds engine.

Simple geometry my friend.

You got red thumbed like 20 seconds of your comment.. I'll help you out.
User avatar #79 to #78 - cormy (12/02/2013) [-]
That's just r0ll because I red-thumbed him and told him to **** off after he posted on my profile saying "hi" again twice, don't worry about it.
I know that in a perfect world, the geometry says yes. But for the sake of safety, I'd prefer my front end coming out 1 metre and my rear end hitting the car behind me rather than having my rear end possibly coming out and then rolling out into the road.

User avatar #83 to #80 - cormy (12/02/2013) [-]
What. So slightly bumping the car in back of me and having a small part of my car out in the road is less safe than having THE WHOLE CAR rolling down the road?
You're assuming the worst case scenario for my wheel placement, I'm assuming the same for yours. Yours is far worse than my little bump to the back and front end sticking out slightly.
#94 to #83 - SunilCCXXXVII **User deleted account** (12/03/2013) [-]
