Or you know, they can just stagger their breathing.
User avatar #4 to #3 - thelordofrepost (09/28/2013) [-]
How long have you been waiting to be mentioned?
User avatar #5 to #4 - stagger (09/28/2013) [-]
I get mentioned enough, not too much that I get annoyed.

Usually about gaming or raunchy drunken stories.
I've read some **** yo.
User avatar #10 to #5 - tittylovin (09/28/2013) [-]
Oddly enough, the gaming one makes sense.
A lot of strategies require the use of the word staggger.
Troop positions, enemy lines, staggering fire to maintain a persistent hail of bullets...

staggering an enemy with a hit.

That as well, completely forgot about that one.

I had a music teacher in junior high school who could play a trumpet note until she got bored. I have no clue how she did it but she was able to breathe in with her nose and out into her instrument at the same time...
User avatar #17 to #15 - articulate ONLINE (09/28/2013) [-]
It's called circular breathing. I'm pretty sure all wind instrument players can do this.
#26 to #17 - anon (09/28/2013) [-]
No. It's very hard to master, and on some instruments it's harder to do than on others. That's why there's only a handful of famous musicians that have done it. I believe Kenny G has done it on stage and I think the world record for circular breathing is about 3 hours. I've tried it on multiple instruments and it is much harder than it looks, and even if you successfully do it, there's usually a slight change in pitch (I usually go about 20 cents sharp) during the technique on the Euphonium. It truly is a difficult technique to master and it is not always the best option. In my experiences, it usually dries out my throat and I usually get a sore throat after doing this, so if you're doing multiple performances this may not be the best option if you can stagger.

I have only met one person in my entire life who can do it. It's harder than you think.

as a flute player myself, I can confirm this. yes i male flute play yes i proud
User avatar #22 to #16 - mlpokeyuan ONLINE (09/28/2013) [-]
why is it considered a female instrument? I wanted to play it, but they were all taken, so I picked violin instead.
User avatar #32 to #22 - mylazy (09/28/2013) [-]
See, I don't particularly care one way or another about the flute, but I have decided that if I ever learn an instrument it will be the violin. The ******* thing is beautiful.
User avatar #51 to #32 - mlpokeyuan ONLINE (09/28/2013) [-]
It has a pretty easy learning curve opinion. It's a lot of fun to play in an orchestra and by yourself if you really enjoy it. I stopped because I can't stand the people I have to be around in orchestra (also i completed my fine arts credits, so it's pointless).
User avatar #53 to #22 - fitchy (09/29/2013) [-]
it's just a predominantly female instrument, same with dudes on trumpet. But it's fun and i enjoy it. Better than every girl in my highschool band, so that was fun.

Found a flute at a party once, started playing Concerning hobbits (Lord of the rings duh), people was going insane. It was awesome.
User avatar #47 to #16 - areialview (09/28/2013) [-]
Can you play through that all?
Years of being the only male flute player in the entire school district, I taught myself how to have extra stamina and endurance so I can play long notes without stopping or being even exhausted
User avatar #52 to #47 - fitchy (09/29/2013) [-]
possibly, but stagger breathing means I don't have

was only able to do it for about 3/4 but that's mostly because i've not been to kind to my lungs if ya catch my drift haha
User avatar #57 to #56 - areialview (09/29/2013) [-]
Yeah, my lungs are one of the purest things in my body since I needed to use them a lot
I later went to Saxophone when I went to Jazz Band

sax is pretty easy if you play flute, you can swap over fairly easily.

I once tried to train myself to do circular breathing but that failed when I passed out and caught my flute on the edge of a table which ripped the keys off

When I played tuba in high school I could hold a note for 6 measures at 72 bpm. Flute players don't know the definition of air.

show music for marching band is like this for me, ( I play Tuba) we spirt around, jazz running doing turns and visuals all while holding whole notes, literally in 230 measures of music we have low D natural for 89 of them

this is the last page of movement 4

and such is the life of a tuba

I can hit about what I think is an octave lower than a normal D for a tuba on my tuba now.
At least that's what a tuner tells me. I'm most likely all sorts of flat or sharp.

My technique, as a bari sax, is to hold over a little more than the other guy (as there will always be like 2 baris only) and try not to pass out.

Played the trumpet, We could never hear the woodwind in our shows no matter where we put them, but I would hope they would work out when to breath. On the off chance that a few people breath at the same time, the effect is highly noticeable.

How big is your band? We have about 40 or so woodwinds so you can hear ours.

Maaan it's been years since I don't play the flute, I might as well start learning again. Anyone has any advice on how could I begin?
#25 to #23 - poopyheadtomatonos (09/28/2013) [-]
Well first off if you're gonna learn flute, you need to get your lips right before you can learn any notes. My advice to learn this is to take your pinky and stick it between your lips, then remove the pinky. That's about how wide apart your lips should be. Then, stick your hand one foot in front of your face and exhale air with your lips in the position they were in, you should feel the airstream on your hand. Then try it on the flute, don't blow INTO the hole, but OVER the hole. The idea is creating friction by striking the air over the lip plate. Then, once you can make a strong sound, look up a flute fingering chart and start learning notes, preferably from the middle C.
#31 to #23 - anon (09/28/2013) [-]
Just start playing dude, learn some music, practice some scales, then maybe get in a corps(e) or ensemble or something.
User avatar #21 - Snookbone (09/28/2013) [-]
Take an inconspicuous breath when needed, come back in more quietly and then gently crescendo to the original dynamic. If you're in a wind band or large orchestra chances are your note will be covered, if it's just the section the chord will still sound psychologically, and if you're on your own... well **** .
