Countdown is a game that involves both numbers and letters. Sometimes you'll be told to write down as many words as you can think of and they have a dictionary to determine whether or not the word is valid.

From what i've gathered by glancing at the show, one of the games they play is where they're offered a range of letters (random ones) and they have to come up with the longest word they can with the letters they have on offer (never said it was interesting)

The letters aren't entirely random, each contestant takes it in turns to choose the letters, they can choose whether a consonant or a vowel is put up on the board (but of course they don't know what the exact letter is going to be). The next round, the other contestant gets to choose the letters
