I've not seen GU, but based on the rest of .hack// that I've seen, SAO is better (until it becomes a sadistic porno. Ok, so only maybe 6 episodes are better. The point is if the writer after the first few episodes hadn't been changed to a horny teenage boy, it would have been amazing).

SAO does a better job at making the series have weight (people actually dying) than .hack//.

SAO would actually be a fun game. The .hack// game is combat only (no skills), tons of grinding, and randomly generated (aka boring) dungeons, and a couple hub towns which you have to teleport between because there is no overworld.
SAO has a huge number of skills ("infinite" according to the anime), hand made dungeons, plenty of non-dungeon space to explore between tens or hundreds of towns.
The only reason people think the .hack// game looks cool is because of the social element, which can be used in any game ever.
User avatar #149 to #124 - VincentKing ONLINE (09/14/2013) [-]
actually there are a lot of skills in the .hack// games, but its rather based on what weapons you are using. In the .hack//quantum OVA, it actually shows people in an alliance war scenario when they are pulled into the partition drive (meaning they can now feel pain and die) and actually shows the true emotions of people in that scenario. .Hack// was meant to be a light hearted series to show how people would cope in the beginning, while SAO was more about them trying to escape.
#150 to #149 - anon (09/14/2013) [-]
I meant skills as in fishing, cooking, smithing, you know, non-combat gameplay.
Not swordkill 1, swordkill2, megaswordkill 1, megaswordkill 2, ubermegaswordkill 1. Those are just pretty animations and slightly higher damage numbers, not actual depth of gameplay.
User avatar #155 to #150 - VincentKing ONLINE (09/14/2013) [-]
it is seen in the anime and movies that there is more to it then just battling. In the SAO game, to my knowledge, features just fighting.
#183 to #155 - anon (09/14/2013) [-]
None of the anime that I watched, or the PS2 game had anything other than combat. (The anime had holiday events and pets, but that's not skills.)

And it is blatantly obvious in SAO that it has more than just combat... The straight out say it has "infinite skills" in the first episode, and most episodes after that mention cooking skill, or fishing skill, or smithing skill, or identification skill, or hide skill, or detect skill.

You've clearly never even watched it. You're just a .hack// fanboy who can't accept that .hack// is exclusively button mashing combat and has the most boring dungeons ever.
User avatar #321 to #183 - VincentKing ONLINE (09/15/2013) [-]
you are obviously a SAO fanboy who cant accept anything similar to the series you like.
#334 to #321 - anon (09/16/2013) [-]
I'm not. SAO was an awful anime. After the first few episodes it became meh, and the second half was absolutely terrible.

The fact is, .hack// is only combat and social events. SAO is combat and tons and tons of non-combat skills.

It's a fact that .hack// would be a piece of trash game (which already exists many times over minus the VR), and SAO would be, well it would probably just be an ok game, not a great game, without the VR.

This has NOTHING to do with how you like the anime, it's base solely on the game presented in the anime.

Hey, I've been thinking of starting to watch these, I know there are also video games... Anyway as it often happens with series so BIG, I have no freakn clue as to where to start watching it. Can you help a brotha out?
User avatar #322 to #245 - VincentKing ONLINE (09/15/2013) [-]
Ok, I will want you to go from the start with .hack//sign. This is going to get you into knowing a bit about the series. It starts off slow, but it is pretty good. The downside to this is that it ends around the same time the first 4 games start, so its like a cliff hanger ending, but if that doesnt bother you, then dont worry.

The .hack//roots series is similar, but the series is just the base to the .hack//GU games, ending in another cliff hanger. They do have manga out there though that will fill you in on a lot of information (the mangas slightly different from the game) but it is entirely up to you.

After that, you have legend of the twilight which is non-canon, and if you didn't play the first 4 games, it wont be as interesting to you. There is .hack//Quantum as well which, in my opinion, is pretty cool, but you need some information about the series first, one piece of it comes from the .hack//gu games (huge middle finger to everyone else basically)

If you think this is a series that you may get really into, I suggest watching .hack//the movie, it was released recently in Japan and it is beautifully done and has made a lot of people into .hack//fans.

You're welcome. Take this randomly generated image in return. If the movie doesnt interest you, it shows that the series isn't right for you. If you get really hyped up, then go to sign and work your way up, and at the end of it, rewatch the movie. I almost forgot, theres the .hack//trilogy movie which sums up the GU games into 2 hours I think.

I wasnt sure which series to do. Sign had it where tsukasa was the only one, and the first 4 games had it where people were in comas. In GU though, people were pulled into the game, and could feel the pain their characters felt.

im like 99% sure that nerve gear, which deals with canceling out your nerv signals and putting them in a game WITHOUT surgery to read them is pretty far away from a headset with a tv in it.
#286 to #79 - dross (09/14/2013) [-]
You do realise you're making that statement on the internet? **** man just 200 years ago we didn't even use semi-conductors, let alone computers. 200 years is a fart in the breeze considering our evolutionary time-scale.
User avatar #305 to #286 - annadewitt (09/14/2013) [-]
your also talking about something medical. anything medical has to go through rigorous tests before its even tested on humans. it could take up to twenty years before we even hear of something like nerve gear.
User avatar #307 to #305 - dross (09/14/2013) [-]
Man you know they've already made a basic link between two human brains right? I know a lot of **** is pure sci-fi but interfacing with neurological connections is something that's already been done with retinal implants. It's just a matter of time.

Even 20 000 years would be nothing compared to how long it took us to just evolve sentience.
User avatar #312 to #307 - annadewitt (09/14/2013) [-]
again, your canceling out nerves. which could result in issues with breathing, blood beating. potential death from the game could be very real which they would have to make it safe.

So basically our brains would be put into robot bodies?
#34 to #33 - rimjobmcgee (09/14/2013) [-]
The first method again involves nanobots, keeping you in optimum health, rapid healing, and all the good stuff, but also neutering. The second is a cyborg body, capable of feeling, beyond human, but clearly no breeding. The last is to become purely digital, a god of your own world, creating anything you want, but not physically present at all

I think everyone will be able to get it, despite the expense, because of the interest that could be made off someone who has literally forever to pay i back. Plus it'll be encouraged to prevent further genetic breakdown
User avatar #41 to #38 - andreweasley (09/14/2013) [-]
But, would we still be able too die. Say..like getting hit by a car, Natural disasters?
#43 to #41 - rimjobmcgee (09/14/2013) [-]
Only in extreme cases. The nanobots would be able to stop blood loss inside and out, shock your heart to keep it beating, nanofiber bones and cartilage together. Dying would be difficult
User avatar #44 to #43 - andreweasley (09/14/2013) [-]

SAO is **** here's why

Yes I've watch the entire thing and yes I know Sword Art Online came out in 2009 (Manga) & 2012 (Anime) but I must know what you guys think about this.

This may be a controversial topic here considering the fact how big the fan base is for it but I need to know if I'm not the only one here who didn't like Sword Art Online. Most of my friends all love SOA but I'm the only one who didn't, now the title pretty explains what this thread is going to be about so let's get to the point. Yes I know what I am talking about when I say Sword Art Online sucks, well maybe that was too harsh, ok I just didn't like SOA, sure the art style is AMAZING sure the concept was unique and I like the fact how the hero got with the girl but SOA just didn't stick with me, for the following reasons:

The story line was boring/repetitive.

Kirito was predominately WAY overpowered. Which was kind've annoyed me because it's good to see the protagonist get beaten up once and awhile. (Besides the part where he temperately dies in the world tree).

What's up with his family member having feelings for Kirito?

& Some of the characters were annoying (Yui).

I'm sorry if I made you hate me because of this but come on, am I the only one here who didn't really like this anime?

#273 to #215 - anon (09/14/2013) [-]
Sword Art Online, as an Anime, has two good things going for it: The action and the concept.
The rest is just boring repetitive cliches, one after another. And I'm going to say what I haven't heard from anyone else: Season 2 was way better than season 1, except for the first 3 episodes of season 1 which was the best of the series. And for one reason: It stayed on -topic. There was no side tracking, or any form for time-skipping, like it was in the first season. Sure the bad-guy sucked, but at least he didn't forget his motive like the guy from season 1! The point where Kirito's "sister" is in love with him is pointless and didn't add anything, but neither did any of the pointless characters from season 1! Case-in-point: The first guild Kirito joined, the girl with the little Dragon and the Blacksmith. They where there, and then they where gone until a small cameo of the last episode of season 1. SAO is bad, but not the worst I've encountered in animes.
User avatar #287 to #273 - cormy (09/14/2013) [-]
Season one took place over 2 years and in a far more "real" environment. This naturally leaves room for time-skipping and side-tracking. Things don't change all that much day to day in life, so you get time-skips. Side-tracking happens aswell when nothing seems to be going anywhere and all you ever do is beat dungeon after dungeon after dungeon.
I'll accept that a lot of the secondary characters were mostly pointless...
#277 to #215 - blanketandpillow (09/14/2013) [-]
I actually stopped watching towards the end of the first season. The last good part, at least for me, was the guild's death, and then for about 3 episodes the plots had three different girls falling for Kiri He even broke one of the girl's best sword (Lizzie or Izzie I think) and she was sad and mad for about one minute before shrugging it off. How much money would that sword cost her? Oh, and then she gave the super powerful sword she made to Kirito, for free, for whatever reason. The only reason Kirito was even in danger in the episode was because he had to save Lizize.

When he went to save the other girl's pet, he is literally invincible. There was absolutely no chance of him getting killed, even though it was 7 vs 1.

I stopped at the episode when KIrito got the double handed power out of seemingly nowhere, defeated a boss in which Asuna and him ran away nearly sobbing moments before, and the leader of the Nights of Dragon Blood or whatever guild Asuna was in challenged him to a duel to basically fight for Asuna's freedom/Kirito's slavery. It was just.... Stupid.

The girls wore skirts for whatever reason, even though it proved to hinder their performance in battle. I understand if a game wants to make female character appealing like that, but I think most of them would change into pants when the game became actually dangerous. When Kirito was fighting Asuna's body guard, all i could hear was "Isn't that Asuna? She _ is_ pretty!"

I just hated that show so much. I tried finishing it, I really did, but I just couldn't.

It seems like a lot of the things you've pointed out are pretty average anime ploys....
#304 to #301 - blanketandpillow (09/14/2013) [-]
I've watched Naruto and One Piece when I was much younger, and it might have been due to the fact that I was too young to really care, but I didn't notice this.

And just because they're average doesn't mean they're good. Actually, if these are considered normal in anime, I can see why people hate it so much.
User avatar #326 to #304 - cormy (09/15/2013) [-]
But if it's considered normal in anime, why hate this particular one over others? What I'm saying is that those aren't good points to tackle when saying it's bad since so many other animes do the same thing. Nearly all stories encorporate SOME form of convenience for their characters for the sake of the plot, otherwise these stories would be a boatload less epic than they are. So many times they give the bad guys the upperhand in the beginning and instead of outright destroying their opposition, they're left to live another day. Silly things like that you just gotta... Accept I guess for the entertainment value. Can't take stories too seriously.
Sorry for the late reply, got interrupted.
User avatar #292 to #215 - mizzycupcakes (09/14/2013) [-]
I feel like as soon as they beat the creator of soa the story line dropped significantly. If you've played and mmo like WoW I think maybe you would appreciate it a little bit more? And the fact that they were fighting for more than just hey I want to beat the game, but hey I want to save my life, it immediately made the story and his progression through the levels more awesome. Although he did start off quite a bit more knowledgeable than most of the other players there, there is an obvious progression in not only his strength but his character/morals throughout the story. Maybe give it another go and watch the little things throughout the show.

Also, I didnt much like that his sister ended up liking him, but in her defense, she didnt know it was him and she was looking for some kind of emotional support while dealing with the fact that her cousin (whom she recently found that fact out) was a total dick and was suddenly kind. It can **** a person up.... well. thats my soap box lol

I'm... Not sure in what way you found the story line boring or repetitive. Sure the actual game was but the story and characters themsevles progressed A LOT throughout the series so I really don't get where you're coming from there.
Kirito wasn't overpowered, he simply knew what he was doing. As a beta tester he had already experienced the first 10% of the game just about and that gave him a huge head-start on other players considering that the ressources in the game were supposedly limited. Meaning that he knew where to get all of the best stuff and did get it before anyone else did, leaving them with far weaker items to get since chances are the more powerful ones are unique. I'm not even entirely sure whether he was bluffing or not when he spoke about cheating in the beta test aswell, which would mean he'd have an even bigger knowledge base than even the other beta-testers did. Inside the game, even after becoming quite a lot more powerful than other players, most of the time he ended up chilling at lower floors because he liked to do so. He enjoyed helping weaker players and didn't like how serious the other top players were, which made him seem OP a lot of the time but when he got to a floor that was more his level (floor 75 with the skeleton boss, he was level 78 at the time and it's said that to SAFELY beat a floor, you should be 10 levels above it. This takes parties into account aswell as the game was MADE for you to team up against bosses), he had quite a lot of difficulty and almost failed.
Now for the second Arc with Alfheim and whatnot. To put it to you bluntly, younger sisters almost always have a thing for their older brother, even their father sometimes. I know because my sister was the same way, until I finally conciously noticed it and started distancing myself from her. It's just because we are the first people that treat them well, so they learn to love us.
Eh... I really liked Yui to be honest.

What kind of place do you live in where younger sisters having crushes on their brothers are normal?
User avatar #284 to #267 - cormy (09/14/2013) [-]
The kind where their brothers and fathers show love for them and where children don't yet know where to draw the line between caring for and loving someone I guess =\
... Maybe I'm just too sexy for my own good? I don't know man, I've just seen it happen is all.

But she wasn't young, was she? I, honestly, thought my 2nd cousin was cute (though I thought pretty much everyone, boy and girl, were cute) when I was five, but then shortly after I figured out that incest was wrong. If I grew up still liking my brother like that, it would be weird and wrong and disgusting.
User avatar #327 to #290 - cormy (09/15/2013) [-]
My sister was born when I was almost 8, so yes, she was young. When I was 14 she'd be about 7 and like you, I also found most people attractive when I was younger, especially my aunts and to be honest, I don't think I've grown out of it. Sure I know it's "wrong" and would most likely end up badly combined with the inbreeding problem buuut that doesn't make me like them any less than I do. I don't see it being weird, wrong or disgusting, I just don't really see it as a viable option but other than that, not such a big deal.
User avatar #237 to #236 - cormy (09/14/2013) [-]
Slightly continued:
Them being cousins just made it easier for her to see her "brother" as something more.
I thought Yui was adorable and made a great addition to their "family".
Always keep in mind that they spent 2 YEARS in that game and that people were actually DYING. Made the whole thing a lot more intense, especially as everyone lost hope as it went along in the first month.
The Alfheim Arc was pretty lame in my opinion but the characters pulled me through it. Story was **** in that one but there was basically only 1 point to the whole thing, saving Asuna.

It was okay when they were still in SAO, then that finishes and suddenly incest plot line. It went from okay to **** in one episode

I agree to a certain degree.

The whole incest part (though it's "just" with cousins, which seems to be okay in Japan) is just strange. The story... well, yeah. They ran into a bossroom, half of them got killed and Kirito saved everyone.

And the 2nd Part with Alfheim and that creep... allofmynope

i would take either honestly but i like the feel of SAO better the world has too much of a techno fantasy feel

whereas SAO is like fullon medieval steel on steel badassery

correct me if i'm wrong..but The World is dot.hack right?
#66 to #65 - numbertwozeldafan (09/14/2013) [-]
Indeed; it's the mmo that the .Hack// games, anime, etc takes place in. A lot of the .Hack// game plot comes from player v player or AI of some sort (Morganna, AIDA, etc), so I'm super-interested in seeing if CC could ever make an MMO that shows us the game-side story (history of the world, various towns, etc).

Have hot raven for your trouble.

I have ALWAYS wanted to get into .hack// but I just don't know where to start. I remember playing the first game of it on the PS2 though. Fun af

My personal recommendation? Start with either the manga or the novels; they're a LOT easier to follow than the games.

If you want to do it continuity-wise, go down this list (I left out the novels, because I can't remember off the top of my head where they all fall in the timeline).

SIGN - Anime
INFECTION - Game, ps2
MUTATION - Game, ps2
OUTBREAK - Game, ps2
QUARANTINE - Game, ps2
TWILIGHT/ Legend of the Twilight - Anime/Manga, though only the manga version is canon.
ROOTS - Anime
REBIRTH - Game, ps2
REMINISCE - Game, ps2
REDEMPTION - Game, ps2
G.U. - Movie adaptation of the above 3 games
LINK - Game, psp/Manga, but good luck finding any ******* copies of the manga, I've looked.
QUANTUM - ova series.

I got into the series at TWILIGHT, but it didn't take much effort to catch up.

soo many ****** games O_O I think infection was the one I played also. Where bear (I think his name was bear) was teaching kite how to play the game then gets owned by the hacker/thingy whatever it was and ends up in a coma?
User avatar #71 to #69 - numbertwozeldafan (09/14/2013) [-]
That is indeed Infection. The 'hacker/thingy' is Skeith, one of the eight Phases of Morganna.

And don't worry, it's only 8 games total. There's one that's not on the list, but only because it can't be played anymore.

That is a shame. When I first saw the Oculus RIFT my heart skipped a beat and I could barely contain my excitement. I long for such an MMO.

So, reading the comments and I find something odd.

So many people seem to assume that once something like a full immersion virtual reality game is made, it'll automatically have the same story as SAO. Why is that? I'm fairly certain the first thing would be a generic fantasy RPG, followed by a generic shooter, followed by a dating sim, followed by GTA.

I for one would ******* love it if VR became real and accessible to the common person. Imagine the capability of having the older folks in the homes able to go on adventures, not just sit and wait for relatives to visit for maybe fifteen minutes. Or it could be a form of therapy for various things, like phobias or even paralysis, assuming the intercepted signals from your brain are still sending signals to the lost parts. True, there would likely be a large spike in obesity, muscle weakness, and death by malnourishment, but if a shut down timer is put in, that might help a bit. Or, you know, people learn about moderation.

Still waiting on Augmented Reality, though...

im risking red thumbs here, but isnt SAO pretty much same thing as the .hack// series?
User avatar #329 to #315 - sao (09/15/2013) [-]
They are very different. Where as .hack is focused on character development, SAO is focused on action. I'm not saying one is better, just that they are very different barring the settings.
User avatar #342 to #329 - unlithe ONLINE (10/10/2013) [-]
... i dont understand how SAO is focused on action more than character dev. i mean basically the entire ******* series was the development of the relationship of kirito and asuna...
User avatar #343 to #342 - sao (10/11/2013) [-]
.hack has very little fighting and instead focuses on how the characters slowly change based on the events around them. It's slow paced and attempts to give a thought by though decent. In SAO, Kirito changes very little over the course of the story and most emotion comes from "win or die" moments. The series is effectively in stasis if you're talking about character development. Also, the series most definitely doesn't focus on the development of their relationship. While their relationship is a pretty consistent theme starting 1/3 of the way through, it's not like you really see development in it. They get together and then are a static couple for a few episodes. She is then "lost" and becomes a damsel for the rest of the series. It's not like their is any relationship development for that entire period she is gone. I'm not saying SAO is inferior, but it is definitely less focused on character development. That's not really an opinion, it's pretty much fact.
User avatar #344 to #343 - unlithe ONLINE (10/11/2013) [-]
hm. would you reccomend .hack//?
User avatar #345 to #344 - sao (10/11/2013) [-]
It depends on the person. It really is quite slow. You should watch and episode or two to get a good idea, just don't go in expected any real action though. In my experience, most people who enjoyed SAO, don't enjoy .hack.
User avatar #346 to #345 - unlithe ONLINE (10/11/2013) [-]
okay. i suppose i might enjoy it as i did enjoy most of deathnote. sounds kinda like that. where would one such as i watch it?
User avatar #347 to #346 - sao (10/11/2013) [-]
I just streamed it after Googling .hack//sign. I probably ended up watching it on animefreak or animehere. Whatever Google brought up. You can probably find a good torrent of it if you prefer to watch it that way.

Well, we do have basic things like prosthetics that respond to nerve signals, so we cant be that far off from something like this. Personally, I'd like to experience a SAO world, it looked like fun (apart from the dying and stuff), and yeah, the show wasn't spectacular, but I really liked to whole "video game" background to it. The Rift, however, isn't even close to what the show depicted.
User avatar #182 - kaycie (09/14/2013) [-]
I don't understand how people are alive in this show?
If they're trapped in the game for probably at least a few weeks, how are they keeping their physical body alive?

I've only seen a few episodes, do they explain it in the show?
