Bringing my dog with me on long trips from my Uni to hometown has got to be one of MY favourite things. I've got a 68 Dart with a bench seat and if it's late at night and we're driving back he'll lay his head on my lap and I'd stroke his ears as we listen to Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan while the road rolls by. I hope it was one of his favourite things too... Highways get a lot lonelier without a friend to ride with.

Someone who enjoys great music, classic cars and the companionship of a fellow dog I think I found a new friend. I will be dedicating my next late night long haul drive to you and your dearly departed companion
User avatar #23 to #21 - DmOnZ (09/13/2013) [-]
Thanks my friend, love Dylan and Cash as well as the car. While the slant six ain't the most powerful thing in the world, it takes a damn miracle for the thing to break down. That being said my companion was my favourite of the bunch. Thanks for the thoughts, and safe driving.

They're all outstanding dogs, but make sure you do your research before you ever seriously consider getting one.

Even the average lab or border collie is a big commitment, but all of these breeds are much more challenging than most kinds of dogs and sadly, the majority of people who get them don't keep them for very long -- whether because they're too difficult to train, or just because they run off and aren't the type of dog to come back, even if the owner was trying to keep them safely contained or just ignorantly allowing them to wander around loose.

When a dog was specifically designed for hundreds of generations to run for miles and miles, it's almost impossible to go against instinct like that - yet people still insist on "off-leash training", allowing them access to unfenced yards, or leaving them unattended in fenced areas that they can very easily jump or dig out of.
They're like owning dogs on Hard mode, but they're worth it and people who risks their lives and aren't devoted to taking proper care of them shouldn't even have them.

For everyone who love huskies and other nordic breeds but know they could never accommodate the special requirements they have, should consider other similar but smaller, less challenging breeds - Pomeranians can make excellent little dogs that are related to huskies, malamutes and other spitz breeds; but for someone who doesn't mind looking around to find a rarer breed available, the Alaskan Klee Kai is a Miniature Husky which stays puppy-sized forever and is much easier to work with.

I just love them for their wolf like looks and how fluffy they are, i dont like short haired breeds. I've only occasionally read up on them here and there, as much as i want one i know i cant have one. I would be fine with walking it, keeping stick insects and giant beetles i regularly have to walk to woods for rotting wood or walk up the local resiovoir for bramble. Unfortunately with my job i wouldnt have time for one, would be alone for 9 hours of the day and when i come home and after i've sorted out all my other parents its time to go to bed for work in the morning. Thanks for the info though, its appreciated.

now just to clarify

if its fully grown and can still fit inside a shoe box, its NOT a dog, its a yapping beanie baby

real dogs are big things
User avatar #84 to #45 - jajathezombie (09/13/2013) [-]
I think it's more about attitude. I'm partial to big dogs, but I have a miniature dachshund and I love the little guy to death. He's arthritic and mostly deaf now, but in his prime he killed things. A lot of things. Rabbits, squirrels, snakes, moles, groundhogs, foxes, possums, badgers, even a few birds. He would always drag the desecrated carcass to my feet and look up with his tail wagging like he'd just done the greatest thing ever.
User avatar #90 to #45 - secondlawprevails (09/13/2013) [-]
Not hating on little dogs, but I too am partial to larger breeds. Just something about a dog you can hug and wrestle with, and is actually big enough to protect you if need be.
User avatar #99 to #90 - konradkurze (09/13/2013) [-]
the beanie babies are cute and all, but they cant do the proper dog stuff like fetch, or wrestle, or protect you,
stil trying to work out if the little ones are also more co-dependant, most owners ive seen who have them, as soon as they try to move away from the little dogs they freak out and whine like mad

hell one time my flatmates mother brought her pomeranian over, hooked the the leash to the door handle while she moved 3 feet away from the dog to take her shoes off, the rat freaked out, started tugging like mad on the leash and yelping pretty loud as if being 3 whole feet away from her was abandoment

Did I say, "is"? Sorry. I meant, "was". My grandma killed my dog.

Well... not directly. My dog was a racist (my dad's doing) and my grandma brought him to the pound while I was away at college and the pound lady was black.... long story short: he bit her, he ran, he turned into a flapjack thanks to a truck.
