Yes, regular headphones would be almost as detrimental to your survival as the varying degrees of temporary and long term hearing loss due to gunfire. I would recommend a good pair of active noise cancelling headphones designed for sport shooting, protects you from damaging sounds of >x decibel while allowing you to hear things normally, some even help you hear better than you normally would

User avatar #114 to #113 - thegamerslife (09/13/2013) [-]
>at your friends property

that confused the **** out of me till I realize you meant you were at his home range, not shooting his property. lmao!!
I have my own range, but I supply people who are shooting hearing protection at least. lol
#115 to #114 - bazda (09/13/2013) [-]
Yeah, shooting ON their property I guess I should have said. It was my first time firing a gun, so I had no idea how loud it would be. I think it's good to do it at least once, that way it won't be quite so disorienting if you ever have to fire in defense, cuz chances are, you won't have plugs in when you're shooting a home invader.
User avatar #116 to #115 - thegamerslife (09/13/2013) [-]
Well I don't know about others but that is why I use specially designed defense rounds that incorporate lower db levels, smaller muzzle flash, and lower muzzle flip/recoil to help from being an impediment for the shooter.

You can never get around it really, but going out and doing it deliberately in a range environment should not be done. (I understand you're was an accident, but you should have stopped)
1) you can only damage your hearing. why would you put your hearing at risk when you may never be in a defensive situation.
2) if you are doing it to "get use to it", then you need to build a room simulator to create the situation you are most likely to face. you will most likely be in an enclosed environment where the bang will be contained and be significantly louder. (huge difference from the range with no hearing protection, to your room with no protection). ;D
#117 to #116 - bazda (09/13/2013) [-]
No, I wasn't trying to get used to it, I just think everyone should experience it at least once, so they know what to expect. Of course it won't be exactly the same as a defense situation, but it will at least jar people out of their video game/movie delusion as to how loud a gun actually is.
User avatar #118 to #117 - thegamerslife (09/13/2013) [-]
Even with ear pro on it still is louder than people expect. I've seen kids cry before cause they were terrified by how loud it was (although that was a 500 S&W... lol).
I just have to disagree though...that one time could be all it takes to lose that range of your hearing permanently.

now i'm probably gonna sound stupid here, but everyone's saying guns are super loud and cause ear damage, then how comes soldiers aren't all as deaf as old people?
User avatar #58 to #49 - thelastamerican ONLINE (09/12/2013) [-]
For some jobs you do need ear protection. But for most small arms used in the modern military of most countries they use the 5.56 witch isn't very loud at all. You can shoot all day without hearing protection and it would be like listening to music kind of loud. I'm all for wearing your ears, but in combat, I would probably not wear earplugs. The really loud things, like grenades and artillery is probably what I would worry more about if I had the presence of mind to worry at all about my hearing if I survived the next five minutes.

It's not like it used to be when soldiers were toting around a real rifle like a garand or something similar. THOSE are loud. Shooting those without ears will screw your hearing after a couple engagements.
#61 to #58 - strandern (09/12/2013) [-]
We always used earprotection when I did my National Service.
Believe me; a 5.56 IS more than loud enough to **** up your hearing
User avatar #106 to #61 - thelastamerican ONLINE (09/13/2013) [-]
I wouldn't know about the rifles that the military uses I guess. I've got an AR, but it's tooled up for match shooting, so it's got a longish barrel witch soaks up quite a bit of the noise. I still wear my ears though.
#107 to #106 - strandern (09/13/2013) [-]
We used HK416N, with a "medium" length barrel.
Also used the AG-3, 7.62... loud even with the ear-muffs on
User avatar #108 to #107 - thelastamerican ONLINE (09/13/2013) [-]
All I know is that between my AR, and my .308 savage I would much rather shoot the AR without hearing protection.
#109 to #108 - strandern (09/13/2013) [-]
I'm guessing your AR is a 5.56?

The .308 = 7.62, which is basically the biggest you'd ever get in a practical AR
User avatar #110 to #109 - thelastamerican ONLINE (09/13/2013) [-]
Well, techniclally my AR is chambered for 223, witch blows, because I can't buy the military surplus 556 because the extra pressure pops the primers out of the case and they jam up my gun, but for the sake of the conversation, yeah, the AR is chambered for 556.

I would love to have an AR-10 though. I'm a huge fan of .308.
#111 to #110 - strandern (09/13/2013) [-]
7.62s... fun to shoot, ******* annoying to carry due to the extra weight and stuff after you've gotten used to a 5.56
User avatar #112 to #111 - thelastamerican ONLINE (09/13/2013) [-]
I would imagine. My range bag for my .308 weighs significantly more than my bag for my AR. Just imagine humping that **** through the burning hot dessert... No, I'll stick with the nice shady range at Knob Creek thanks.
User avatar #67 to #61 - karson (09/12/2013) [-]
this. especially carbine length rifles. loud as **** .
#70 to #67 - strandern (09/12/2013) [-]
I wasn't allowed into the special forces (Norway) due to having slightly damaged hearing, and the only times I've done anything that would damage my hearing would be having a 9mm go off quite close without hearing-protection (never trust dumb friends with guns).

So if a 9mm was able to damage my hearing then what do you think a 5.56 would do?
User avatar #71 to #70 - karson (09/12/2013) [-]
true **** . I can deal with my mosin nagant, ak74, or sks just fine, but damn is 5.56 isn't a loud bitch, from my experience, at least. loudest gun I've ever shot was one of those little springfield XD compact pistols in .45acp. I swear I thought my ears were bleeding. that **** was ridiculous.
#74 to #71 - strandern (09/12/2013) [-]
Not the loudest, no, but it will still do some damage.

I wear protection when shooting anything bigger than a .22 outside.
If I'm inside - always protection, no matter what
#79 to #49 - thorsballs (09/12/2013) [-]
Im currently employed in SDF and we use Electrical earmuffs which filtrate high blasts, when indoors we use them in addition to normal ear buds since indoors is a whole other level.

You can fight without em but it will hurt you hearing in the long run.

User avatar #52 to #50 - Gandalfthewhite (09/12/2013) [-]
