Ok, so say you go halfway there. Then you walk back. That's the same distance as walking all the way there. The only difference between the two trips is that one has the time it takes to drive to work and one doesn't. So you would be later. Does that help?
I guess I failed to put it in a simple expression but I didn't feel like typing too much. Still, if you had thought about the first line of my post it made sense.
