He felt guilty because it wasn't just a character dying on a show, it was a person losing their job.

My expectation for the end of the books:
Kings landing has been taken, the Stark banner fly's high above the front gates, Stark men running through the streets of the city. Ten Stark banner man walk through the large doors into the main hall. "Your grace, we have taken the city what are your orders?" asks one banner man who is battle scarred and covered in Lannister blood. The guard looks upon a dark robed man who's sitting on the iron throne, the dark robed man leans forward into the light of the surrounding candles, just enough so the light reveals his face, the man takes in the smell of battle and whispers...Hodor

I have a hard time believing he experiences guilt for ********* characters we love.

It's not for killing the characters that he felt guilty, it was for putting some very nice real people out of a job.

i began reading the song of ice and fire series thinking everyone was overstating how much he likes to screw with your favorite characters and kill them off
at least one time in every book i have felt a part of me die with each character
in storm of swords i literally sat for twenties minutes in stunned silence at a certain part, readers will know which part i mean. it took me two days to work up the courage and energy to start reading again
martin is a great writer but im a little worried that by the end the only character with an established pov he will have left is sansa and no one wants that

Whenever I see a character leaving a TV show because he died or something in the story, I wonder if it's because they got a better offer somewhere else.

Or maybe it's because their character gets killed in the book..

He shouldn't feel guilty about it. Any actor employed to do an adaption of a book or series of books should have read said series of books. The actors would have known if they were going to be killed off or not. when they signed up for the part
