This is my favourite Richard Dawkins quote
Richard Dawkins "Science ?... It works....Bitches"
User avatar #94 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
Does anyone else think Richard Dawkins is a stuck up jackass that doesnt deserve any credit he gets? I mean the majority of his career is activist atheism. I'd much prefer to sit there and listen to another intelligent man that isn't such a blunt ass hole. Carl Sagan anyone?
User avatar #100 to #94 - kyuubey (08/26/2013) [-]
I don't see how he is a stuck up ******* just because he actively supports science and skepticism.
User avatar #102 to #100 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
Let me guess...you're one of those people that worship a figure simply because other people do it?

Have you even read any of his writings or seen him in interviews? He can be a huge blunt ass sometimes. Very arrogant and foolish.
User avatar #106 to #102 - greeet (08/26/2013) [-]
**** , way to be a complete ******* . Someone replies to your comment in a reasonable way and you bitch at them?
User avatar #107 to #106 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
I didn't bitch at anyone. You might want to look up the word bitch and find a definition for it.

Noun
A female dog, wolf, fox, or otter.
Verb
informal. Express displeasure; grumble: "the guys were all bitching about commuting time".
User avatar #115 to #113 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
Well, I'm not a female dog, wolf, fox, or otter.

As for the verb form, the only one person I'm expressing displeasure to is Dawkins.
#120 to #115 - anonymous (08/26/2013) [-]
I dunno, I'm no social analyst but I'm pretty sure you expressed displeasure towards them, be it straight forward or subtle
User avatar #121 to #120 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
It was not my intent to, even if I made it seem like such. In which case that'd be my fault.
User avatar #105 to #102 - kyuubey (08/26/2013) [-]
Uhm no. I do not worship him but i do highly admire his works and contribution on the gene-centered views of evolution and providing criticism towards extreme religious views.

I have read three of his books (The Selfish Gene, The Extended Phenotype and The Blind Watchmaker) and have seen many interviews and lectures of him, and i disagree that he is arrogant or agressive, the only time when he appears arrogant or agressive is when he is faced with creationist idiots who try to use the same overused arguments that have been refuted times and times again. I recommend looking up the conversation between Richard Dawkins and Alister Mcgrath.
User avatar #109 to #105 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
Good, atleast you're informed.

My point is his career is based on not educating but writing something or saying something and throwing it out there. He's more of a lecturer than an educator. He isn't persuasive and his arrogant attitude towards religion in general isn't going to bring people closer to science.

I much enjoy listening to the good old Bill Nye or Tyson or re watch some of Carl Sagan's old science productions. Those people do something that Dawkins doesn't. They persuade and they make it entertaining.

They don't sit there and write books or go to interviews to battle with fundamentalists, they educate the public about science. They don't care about atheism because they rarely discuss it. They're simply scientists. And they like to inform others of science.

Huge difference between that and Dawkins.
User avatar #110 to #109 - kyuubey (08/26/2013) [-]
The only difference is that they use different styles to bring across their points, but they all deliver the same message.

People like Nye and Tyson respect Dawkins and would absolutely disagree with you claiming that he is an arrogant stuck-up. Just because he criticizes an extreme part of religious that has a massively dangerous influence does not mean he is arrogant.
User avatar #112 to #110 - thatoneiranianguy (08/26/2013) [-]
He is very blunt and arrogant at times. Whether it be in some interviews or in books he writes.

It's not that I don't respect him, I do, but I don't like him. He's a lecturer and not an educator. He's more of an advocate for atheism than he is for science. He wrote two books back in the 70's and 80's that were actually about biology and its core point was teaching about science. I loved those books, why? Because they educated me about science. They weren't some rambling dribble to help advocate for atheism like in the God Delusion. Not to say that book wasn't good, it had many good points and was well written.

But I would like to see more of his science side than this "I'm an advocate for Atheism and I'm here to stay." He has so much more potential that he could be harnessing.

Sagan is vastly superior. Dawkins has some good ideas, but he's too standoffish and arrogant.
