That's actually pretty ******* smart of the tree. Think about it, it's running it's roots along the gaps in between the bricks so it can get the most nutrients.

That's exactly why you see it like that in the picture. It's not gonna get nutrients from the brick, so it conforms to the pattern going in between so it can reach soil, just like the branches orient the leaves toward the sunlight.
