>Registering to be a guinea pig getting cooked to death by radiation.

"How's that cancer going, Greg?

It's bad but not as bad as the polluted water, I sure wish we had some engineers here, or some doctors. Yeah I don't have anything to do but masturbate now. The Blu-ray players all broke. Well, I'm going to go on a killing spree and rape the colonists."

The Mars one project is a fucking joke. They want to send pods that you'll die in like rats. If you want an actual colonization project, it can't rely on BILLIONS OF PUBLICLY DONATED DOLLARS. They are literally just hoping someone will give them billions to send people in tin cans. A proper effort would send a team of systems engineers, doctors and medical researchers with the most advanced technology we can. Mars One is a sick experiment.

No because it's a fucking scam, are you retarded?

Also, why are we spending time trying to establish a colony on Mars? Why not spend this time and money on making the areas of Earth livable? Most of Australia? The Sahara Desert? We can make these places livable first, surely?

Let me explain it for the people who don't know what it is. Mars One is a project that aims to establish a human colony on Mars by 2023.

Anyone can apply for a fee that goes from 5$ to 75$. This does not grant you passage though, after the application people will undergo more 3 rounds of selection.

This voyage to Mars however, is a one way trip. Nothing will be coming back to Earth, what goes to Mars will stay in Mars, and whoever reaches the planet will die there, whether it is from complications or old age.

After the first manned trip, that will carry four people, the Mars One Project to send an extra four people capsule every two years.

And the following capsules will most likely land far away from the original, considering it is an entire planet.
#89 to #87 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (08/18/2013) [-]
Nah, capsules can be landed with an amazing precision with the right calculations. The following capsules will be landed near the first landing site and then be attached to the other modules using rovers.

Supplying several colonies on a planet would be too unpractical for what they are aiming for.

Well, when they've been there for say 40 years, the technology has most likely come a far way, I think they will be able to go back if they really wish, after a long time.
User avatar #73 to #34 - tittentei (08/18/2013) [-]
I don't have much belief in this. To think that amateurs could creatively solve occuring problems better than professionals is just, yeah. And it will surely be some legal problems along the road. No, it's not gonna happen. Not in 2023, and not with this idea.
#77 to #73 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (08/18/2013) [-]
Honestly, if by professional you mean government agencies, don't expect them to show much effort in space exploration now. We are past the Cold War, Space Research no longer contributes as heavily to military interests as it did then and so Russia and the US are dropping it now.

Anyway whoever had planned it would make it a permanent mission, return trips are far too unpractical with the current technology. This isn't the I.S.S. or the Moon, while being out of the Earth system, and thus way further than any of these two, Mars also has an atmosphere and a stronger gravity, which makes a return trip with a payload of that size really unpractical.

Although I do feel it is strange that a random non-profit private company popped out of nowhere and wants to establish a colony on Mars, and I'm also a bit skeptical about the success of this mission.
User avatar #49 to #34 - sinonyx (08/18/2013) [-]
dont forget to add...

in order to actually have any chance of getting int, you need to be able to contribute something worthwhile to everyone there
you need to be mental healthy, and physically healthy
i'm willing to bet that the people who get in, are going to have masters or PhDs
#72 to #49 - fcrocker (08/18/2013) [-]
Actually they said they were looking for your more 'Average Joe' type people, as it is going to be broadcasted as a reality style television show. Also they want a good mix of people, so they're not looking for just your Fighter pilots and doctors.
They just want people who are healthy, mentally sound and sociable.

TL;DR: Still no-one from Funnyjunk

That's what breaks me up about it.. such a high risk mission and the only people going are the kind of people that qualify for the mission aren't at all expendable.
User avatar #45 to #34 - Whetstone (08/18/2013) [-]
I feel like the best qualifiers would probably be people who live in desert climates. Because I live in a hilly forest filled area, I know for a fact that 1 year of not having that would drive me insane. Although there is still wildlife to a certain extent in deserts, it would probably be more adjustable for those people to be on mars (If you take away the being millions of miles away from your home planet and having to wear a special suit every time you walk outside part)

I guess you could use internet in a limited way, however loading a single page would take 8 minutes when Mars is closest to Earth, and 40 minutes when it is farthest.

No, your logic is all fucked up nigga. It will take 4 minutes for your request to be sent to Earth and 4 more for the Earth internet system to sent data back. That doesn't mean that you will only receive one frame of data, where the fuck did you get that? Once they get the request, they will start sending data immediately, meaning 8 minutes after you wish you could be watching porn, you actually could be watching it without it even buffering or anything. It's not like you have to sent a request for every single frame, you know?

A one-way trip to Mars doesn't sound too appealing. Some might want to do this to be immortalized in history or to do what no one has done before, but the idea of not being able to come back--and at such a high risk of death--is a deal-breaker. You'd be missing out on so much Earth has to offer, especially if a qualified applicant is relatively young.
