Except that's not how the theology works at all. The belief is that Satan was sent to hell to suffer eternal torment for rebelling against God's will. He has no control over his suffering or anyone else's. Satan only wants other people to end up there with him because he's an asshole.
#36 to #7 - John Cena (08/18/2013) [-]
Very true, the whole notion that he's down there punishing people is silly, he's miserable and wants others to be miserable with him. He's not tasked with punishing the sinful, he's just an ass who wants every one to suffer as he suffers.

#16 to #7 - John Cena (08/18/2013) [-]
Except that Satan never went to Hell, and is the angel in charge of tempting humans to make sure they are worthy of Heaven. Sama-el was the angel who rebelled, cast into the pit, an barred by the cherubim from entering Heaven. Which explains why Satan is in Heaven talking to God, in the Book of Job. Sama-el tortures humans, because he hates humans, being told to bow to humans is why he led 1/3 the Host of Heaven in rebellion.

The first sentence of his post is based somewhat on contextual translations of Satan's hebrew name that kind of make him sound like the attorney for Heaven if "the people of Earth vs. the State of Heaven" was a court case (so far as I can tell or makes any sense at all). The context for this translation appears only a few times in the Old Testament though, and pretty much all other references to him in later texts personify him as evil. The rest of his comment comes from Jewish lore I know nothing about.

But then comes my next question. If so many satanist cults claim they can summon Lucifer and other great demons (which are allegedly in hell against their will) to learn stuff from them and gain some of their "demonic powers", wouldn't it mean there's a way out of hell for them ?
I mean, if demons are so powerful that they can **** us up anytime they want to, wouldn't it mean they don't have to rely on some petty incantations and drawings made by humans to actually roam freely out of hell ?
There have been some cases of demonic possession (or so would some multimedia platforms have us believe), so wouldn't this mean that they are already living beside us ?
Could my nice neighbor actually be Satan incarnate ?

Also, the bible speaks of a second coming of "our savior", Jesus Christ.
If demons are already between us, and so many wars are springing out with the imminent threat of a nuclear war, would that mean that Jesus is about to be brought back ?

If all that is true (or at least possible, given modern theist ideology), would it mean that we are going to witness an absolutely EPIC boxing match between Jesus and Satan ?

The whole notion of Satan being the ruler of Hell came from Paradise Lost, which depicted Satan as being a rather more sympathetic character. People have been using the "lord of Hell" depiction ever since.
#14 to #11 - FormerAnonAssassin (08/18/2013) [-]
And by extension, don't people see this, "Ruler of Hell," as a punisher because of his attempted coup (if you would call it that) and he's just trying to satisfy a God/ Judge Dredd complex?
#22 - swagloon (08/18/2013) [-]
Satan is not the ruler of hell; he's prisoner number one. And he wants you in with him so you can make you into his bitch.

well in Revelation 20:10 it says so; but your right technically that's the 'future'

"And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and [a]brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."

Firstly, (I'm not saying I think you must believe this, I'm just clarifying.)
The common belief is not that Satan punishes you.He is punished along with you. No church professes that belief.
Secondly,
The above sentiment is not actually in the Bible; it says the wicked will be killed, not kept alive and tortured.
Maybe these Tumblr retards should actually talk to a Christian or two. They all believe a plethora of completely different things from one another.
#46 to #18 - John Cena (08/18/2013) [-]
"They all believe a plethora of completely different things from one another"

Like Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Protestants etc, but it all centers around the same sort of dichotomy. I'm sure one belief in the big damn mess that is religion could at least slightly corroborate their side of it.

plus, ya know, it's a joke.
User avatar #19 to #18 - RandomAnonGuy (08/18/2013) [-]
Actually a lot of churches teach that Satan is the ruler over hell and that the wicked will be tortured forever. That's where the ******* idea comes from, you twat. Sure wasn't the hindus at any rate.

He's not stuck there. He's in charge of it, yes, but he isn't stuck. The bible mentions a handful of times he appears other places. He can come as he pleases. He even goes up to heaven at least once to talk to God about stuff.

I always pictured hell to be a big party, where everyone drinks, does drugs, meet awesome dead celebrities, and listen to heavy metal music. While heaven would be a place where all the republicans and Catholics get together and make macaroni pictures for all of eternity.
#2 to #1 - chillins (08/17/2013) [-]
eternity is a long time, just torturing people would get boring after a while, maybe he sets up a nightclub. And to be honest I don't think I want either, again eternity is a long time and I'd eventually find heaven/hell dull.
User avatar #6 to #2 - darkseidrules (08/17/2013) [-]
I feel like that's part of it though. In heaven, you would not have a concept of time. Everything would be a happiness in the moment without having to think of a beginning or end and the space in between.
In Hell, you would have a concept of time. You would remember every second and know that there is no point in which you suffering has reached it half-life. You would remember the unpained moments before your torture and realize that feeling is so long past and will never come again, ever.
#9 to #6 - chillins (08/18/2013) [-]
it sounds more like some sort of dystopea. Forced to live for eternity in a place where you can not witness the passing of each day brain washed into being completely happy in the now.
Even if I would be happy in heaven as I am now, living for eternity like that doesn't really sound appealing to the me I am now. In hell perhaps I would also have no concept of time there, perhaps my mind would go numb or simply just go insane.

I dunno reincarnation (or maybe heaven simulating reincarnation perhaps) sounds the most appealing but hey it isn't productive to think about all that stuff so why bother

User avatar #21 - Sinless (08/18/2013) [-]
Well there's a few different beliefs among Christians, just like the guy below me said.

One is that Satan (or some other name, I forgot) and Lucifer are two different beings. One being the warden of hell, other being the Fallen Morning Star. I never finished reading the Forbidden Books (books the Catholic Church cut out of the bible), but there was a part about Lucifer trying to convince Satan to give him the keys to Hell. Satan was too afraid of God to consort with Lucifer. So in that belief, Lucifer and his fallen angels are punished along with sinners.

Another is that Lucifer despises us so much, as God's beloved creation, that his goal is to get us to Hell. By tempting us with sin, he can lead us to punishment so that he can continue to torture us out of hate for a thousand years until we are all destroyed.

Then there are many who believe that Hell doesn't exist because God loves us too much to condemn us. Though that's ignorant to me; I think it's just "pick and choose" Christians wanting everything to be happy go lucky. I mean punishment is clearly stated in the Bible.

Then there's people who believe there is no torture, just destruction of sinners and devils in the lake of brimstone.

I mean, there are so many different variations of beliefs among Christians, even among the same denominations. The nature of Protestant Christianity leaves nearly everything open to interpretation besides the existence of Jesus Christ, and the nature of humanity leads people to search out every interpretation. I can't tell you how many different beliefs I've heard.

Interestingly according to the qu'ran, satan refused to bow to gods creation (humans) as he viewed them as evil creatures that would poison the earth. Gods response was to challenge him to corrupt them all then, to prove god wrong.
User avatar #55 to #51 - Sinless (08/18/2013) [-]
That's interesting, that actually reminds me of the story of Job which is kind of similar. Satan challenged God that he could corrupt his most faithful servant, Job.

I've always been curious to see the parallels between beliefs; I've actually meant to read the Qu'ran soon.
User avatar #56 to #55 - iloveburzum ONLINE (08/18/2013) [-]
The qu'rans a good read. Reminds you that all the terrorist **** is nothing to do with religion, everything to do with corrupt religious leaders.
User avatar #61 to #56 - Sinless (08/18/2013) [-]
Of course, ethics and religion have always been separate things.

I mean modern day terrorism can be compared to the Crusades, but that doesn't mean Christianity is bad itself. I hold the same belief of Islam, just need to get to reading about it.
User avatar #66 to #61 - iloveburzum ONLINE (08/18/2013) [-]
Interesting you should mention the crusades, because they are supposedly the reason the east mistrusts us westerners.

During the crusades the eastern peoples acted with dignity and honoured surrender, and similar things, whereas the west tended to promise to honour surrender, and then butcher everyone. This is supposed to have happened without fail EVERY SINGLE TIME.

And to this day, we are still considered pure evil!
User avatar #67 to #66 - Sinless (08/18/2013) [-]

Wanted to add my two cents. First of all Satan in the bible is a figure who personifies evil and temptation, after all (according to wikipedia) his name means devires from the Hebrew word for "to obstruct or oppose". At no point is it mentioned that he is the ruler of hell, nor that he is a fallen angel (though his mention in the book of Job does state that he's on God's council). The fallen angel misconception comes from thinking that Lucifer and Satan are the same person. This misconception got popularized by John Milton with Paradice Lost in which he tells the story of rebel angels loosing a battle and being cast into hell. They are lead by their leader Satan, formerly called Lucifer, who then becomes the tempter for Adam and Eve. In short it's biblical fan fiction. Lucifer however occurs in the bible once to refer to the kind of babylon who has "fallen from heaven". Then the new testement says Satan is seen to fall "like lightning from heaven" confusion resulted.
User avatar #80 - ScottP (08/18/2013) [-]
I've always thought of it this way. If Satan is God's enemy, then why does Satan punish God's enemies?
