Do they rob people at sea? No? Then they aren't pirates. It's like calling yourself a bank robber and working as a teacher. I never actually saw any piracy from the strawhats, back when I read the manga.
User avatar #72 to #66 - adu (08/16/2013) [-]
pi·rate [pahy-ruht] noun, verb, pi·rat·ed, pi·rat·ing.
1. a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea.

Yeah, they are definitely ******* pirates. They've sunk hundreds of navy ships over the course of over 600 episodes. Just because they don't always take something with them doesn't mean they're not pirates.
#97 to #72 - anon (08/16/2013) [-]
"sunk hundreds"

more like 30
User avatar #99 to #97 - adu (08/16/2013) [-]
30 is as good as hundreds when your captain can't count very high.
#81 to #72 - whatareyouon ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
and rob/plunder that does indeed indicate you are taking something.
User avatar #90 to #81 - hanabro (08/16/2013) [-]
They stole gold from Skypiea. They committed an act of Piracy. Therefore, pirates.
User avatar #98 to #90 - swagloon (08/16/2013) [-]
right. 'stole'
User avatar #82 to #81 - adu (08/16/2013) [-]
This is the definition I'm using, it's more of an and/or thing than a hard requisite.
User avatar #52 to #48 - iridium (08/16/2013) [-]
They're more or less sailors for most of the show. Apart from fighting off the government (who are freaking evil anyways), they don't really do any plundering.
#73 to #52 - comradewinter ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
They're never the aggressors, they just defend themselves or help people out. If a merchant ship gets attacked and they manage to sink the enemy ship, it doesn't make them pirates.
User avatar #57 to #52 - adu (08/16/2013) [-]
They plunder the government and other pirates, although Nami is really the only one who is concerned about treasure. Every other crew member has their own reasons for wanting to be a pirate. Still, they roam the seas illegally, they steal things from a big boat, and they have cannons and a Jolly Roger on their ship. The only difference is that they don't plunder villages or merchant ships, not for any real moral reasons, but just because there's just not much to gain. Luffy has stated that he doesn't want to be a hero, but he has to keep moving further down the Grand Line and looting defenseless islands would only slow him down as well as earn him more enemies. He only attacks strong targets because he's only interested in becoming stronger.

Sorry for the exposition, but as a person who adores this show it bugs me when people assume they're "not really pirates" just because they don't burn and rape villages. Everyone in the show has their own reasons for becoming a pirate, it's only the small-time pirates that are satisfied with looting villages and getting fat and vulnerable from the spoils.

^yes as entertaining as luffy can be black lagoon is a better example by far of anime pirates.
User avatar #34 to #26 - iridium (08/16/2013) [-]
Since when are they Pirates? Sure they're in some shady smuggling business, but they aren't exactly "pirates" in the traditional sense.
User avatar #94 to #34 - swagloon (08/16/2013) [-]
Because Luffy is a "pirates" in the traditional sense.
User avatar #83 to #34 - logicstrike (08/16/2013) [-]
to be fair they do engage in piracy, though really they are just all round criminals.

Anyone know where I can watch the first Pirates of The Caribbean for free that isn't pirate bay? My internet provider sent me a message about shutting down my internet if I keep going on Pirate bay.

They can't cancel your internet service just for going on the pirate bay(unless you live in China maybe.) There are plenty of things you can legally download on that website. Call them up and remind them you are the customer and they are the provider and if they don't like providing you can take your business elsewhere.
