I don't think there's any probably about it. He's Gandalf.

I agree that Gandalf is more powerful than Dumbledore in a fight.
But let's face the fact that the whole fighting and all the deaths could have been avoided with apparation.

Raistlin is stronger than both...

I just wish more people knew who Raistlin is..

While that's true, Dumbledore always had the wand that never let its user lose, and Gandalf seemed pretty limited in what he could do regularly.

Gandalf is restricted in how much "direct impact" he is allowed to have in Middle Earth, his primary role is to be an advisor / leader of the mortal races so that they can achieve their own victories.
User avatar #37 to #28 - heartlessrobot (08/16/2013) [-]
Right, but the Elder Wand is a wand made by DEATH ITSELF that NEVER allowed it's user to lose in battle. Yeah, they can be assassinated or chose to die, but in direct conflict, they cannot lose. And Death outranks Demigod.
User avatar #53 to #37 - blargchikahonkhonk ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
the elder wand dosnt mean the user cant lose in battle its just the most powerful wand ever. gandalff is effectivly all powerfull but is limmited to how much direct impact he cant cause on events in middle earth
User avatar #66 to #53 - Crusader (08/16/2013) [-]
No, the Elder Wand is unbeatable, the only way to beat it's master is murder or theft.
Plus saying "Gandalf is all powerful, but can't use all his power" is like saying "I have a gun, but I can't use it"
User avatar #69 to #66 - blargchikahonkhonk ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
thats why i said effectivly all powerfull. he is all powerfull when he choses to be but he is limmiting himself in middle earth. he could go ape **** crazy on everyone but he limits himself. more like keeping a gun and having the saftey on
User avatar #58 to #53 - arstya (08/16/2013) [-]
Eh...the Elder Wand really doesn't allow its user to lose in battle. The only real way to win is an underhanded trick without a legit fight.

It depends on which universe the fight is taking place though. In HP Gandalf would lose by a technicality. If it's the LOTR universe Dumbledore would probably be limited as well.
User avatar #59 to #58 - blargchikahonkhonk ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
i surpose if you take it as them being out of both of their universes and on neutral ground gandalf is certainly more powerfull than Dumbledore and as you say the only thing stopping him is a technicality . gandalf is prtrayed as a man of very high intelligence and would probably be able to find a way around said technicality. if he coulding then it would likely be a stale mate of gandalfs greater powers and dumledores inabillity to lose .

Gandalf belongs to an ancient, all-powerful race called Maiar. While on Middle Earth, they cannot bring forth their true potential of power.
User avatar #64 to #48 - Crusader (08/16/2013) [-]
Exactly, so if he can't use it, then why would it be applicable in this scenario?
User avatar #68 to #64 - spleed (08/16/2013) [-]
We're comparing the power of characters.

This discussion isn't happening in Middle Earth.
It's not happening in Hogwarts, either.
User avatar #70 to #68 - Crusader (08/16/2013) [-]
No, we are discussing a fight, a fight taking place on the mortal realm.
Saying "Gandalf is all powerful, but can't use all his power" is like saying "I have a gun, but I can't use it, but I have a gun, so I win"
User avatar #71 to #70 - spleed (08/16/2013) [-]
"Gandalf is probably stronger the Dumbledor"

A discussion of power, nothing more. They're not battling each other.

User avatar #16 to #8 - hisnameisjake (08/16/2013) [-]
Dumbledore is still a mortal, Gandalf is a majar, which is some immortal spirit-angel or something. If anyone that knows more could clarify that would be nice
User avatar #19 to #16 - datgermanguy (08/16/2013) [-]
Well, I'm not an expert, but Maiar are basically immortal servants of the Gods of Middle-Earth (or Arda, as Middle-Earth is just a part of Arda). But although they are immortal, they can still be killed, like Saruman was.
The powers of a Maiar like Gandalf are somehow undefined, but he should be stronger and more durable than a normal person.
User avatar #22 to #19 - effort (08/16/2013) [-]
Basically there is an almighty being named Eru Ilúvata, who created spirits called the Ainur. After the creation of the world, these spirits were sent to help shape and govern the world. Among the Ainur, there were 15 powerful ones who stood out, 1 of them whom turns evil and becomes the Dark Lord, named Melkor/Morgoth. The other 14 are later named Valar, and the remaining lesser Ainur are called Maiar. That is where Gandalf, Saruman Radagast and etc belong. Sauron and Balrogs are also Maiar, but has been under the influence of Melkor.

And If I remember correctly, there were suppose to be 3 maiars who would be sent to Middle Earth to aid the free people(elves humans dwarves etc) against Sauron. Those 3 were Saruman, Gandalf, and Alatar. Gandalf brought Radagast with him, and Alatar brought Pallando with him. After arriving to Middle Earth, instead of being called Maiar, they were named Istari or Wizards.

We don't hear from the two blue wizards since they have traveled east.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Gandalf was restricted from using his full power on the mortal plane for one reason or another.
If a real Tolkien nerd could expound on that, that'd be great.
