Dumbledore is still a mortal, Gandalf is a majar, which is some immortal spirit-angel or something. If anyone that knows more could clarify that would be nice

Well, I'm not an expert, but Maiar are basically immortal servants of the Gods of Middle-Earth (or Arda, as Middle-Earth is just a part of Arda). But although they are immortal, they can still be killed, like Saruman was.
The powers of a Maiar like Gandalf are somehow undefined, but he should be stronger and more durable than a normal person.

Basically there is an almighty being named Eru Il├║vata, who created spirits called the Ainur. After the creation of the world, these spirits were sent to help shape and govern the world. Among the Ainur, there were 15 powerful ones who stood out, 1 of them whom turns evil and becomes the Dark Lord, named Melkor/Morgoth. The other 14 are later named Valar, and the remaining lesser Ainur are called Maiar. That is where Gandalf, Saruman Radagast and etc belong. Sauron and Balrogs are also Maiar, but has been under the influence of Melkor.

And If I remember correctly, there were suppose to be 3 maiars who would be sent to Middle Earth to aid the free people(elves humans dwarves etc) against Sauron. Those 3 were Saruman, Gandalf, and Alatar. Gandalf brought Radagast with him, and Alatar brought Pallando with him. After arriving to Middle Earth, instead of being called Maiar, they were named Istari or Wizards.

We don't hear from the two blue wizards since they have traveled east.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Gandalf was restricted from using his full power on the mortal plane for one reason or another.
If a real Tolkien nerd could expound on that, that'd be great.

While that's true, Dumbledore always had the wand that never let its user lose, and Gandalf seemed pretty limited in what he could do regularly.

Gandalf is restricted in how much "direct impact" he is allowed to have in Middle Earth, his primary role is to be an advisor / leader of the mortal races so that they can achieve their own victories.

Right, but the Elder Wand is a wand made by DEATH ITSELF that NEVER allowed it's user to lose in battle. Yeah, they can be assassinated or chose to die, but in direct conflict, they cannot lose. And Death outranks Demigod.

No, the Elder Wand is unbeatable, the only way to beat it's master is murder or theft.
Plus saying "Gandalf is all powerful, but can't use all his power" is like saying "I have a gun, but I can't use it"

Eh...the Elder Wand really doesn't allow its user to lose in battle. The only real way to win is an underhanded trick without a legit fight.

It depends on which universe the fight is taking place though. In HP Gandalf would lose by a technicality. If it's the LOTR universe Dumbledore would probably be limited as well.

i surpose if you take it as them being out of both of their universes and on neutral ground gandalf is certainly more powerfull than Dumbledore and as you say the only thing stopping him is a technicality . gandalf is prtrayed as a man of very high intelligence and would probably be able to find a way around said technicality. if he coulding then it would likely be a stale mate of gandalfs greater powers and dumledores inabillity to lose .
