Pain is not a chemical reaction.
It's a nerve impulse as far as I know and that's not chemistry.
User avatar #58 to #57 - minecraftlamer (08/16/2013) [-]
it is an electrical pulse in your nerve system

That's basically what I've said.

Pain is actually electrical signals going to the pain when a body part is undergoing some kind of trauma.
User avatar #32 to #9 - ganjalf ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
sodium potassium pumps.
#11 to #9 - anon (08/16/2013) [-]
so in a way, it's actually a physical reaction...
User avatar #48 to #9 - Fgner (08/16/2013) [-]
Except electrical energy has to be produced, transferred, and interpreted. The electrical signal is transferred via an action channel composed of Na+ and K+ de/repolarization traveling down axons. Otherwise, neurons would have no way of controlling electricity, and instead of a controlled nervous system - every single nerve signal would reach every single neuron.

This is also why nerves don't communicate at the speed of light (one of the limitations of an organic brain vs a mechanical brain).
User avatar #12 to #9 - dragontamers (08/16/2013) [-]
I meant to say brain not pain, a freudian slip on my part.
#29 to #12 - nuciferatu (08/16/2013) [-]
No brain, no pain.
User avatar #33 to #9 - lyestcer (08/16/2013) [-]
Actually, all messages sent along nerves are electrochemical. Meaning there is both an electrical component and a chemical component during transmission. The electrical part is when the message is travelling within a neuron and the chemical part is when the message is sent across the synaptic gap between neurons.

tl;dr pain is actually both
User avatar #52 - Kairyuka ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
Literally every single thing you'll ever experience is just a chemical reaction in the brain. Why should that make it less valid?
User avatar #55 to #52 - xoyv ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
even fire is jsut a chemical reaction
User avatar #56 to #55 - Kairyuka ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
Your entire world is just a chemical reaction. Everything we interpret only exists to us because our brain registers it. Like that you could argue that the entire world is just a chemical reaction
User avatar #74 to #56 - fawkwayne (08/16/2013) [-]
Is that going to be the new ambiguous term? Like "You give me a chemical reaction" or "I'm chemically reacting to this fire"
#104 to #74 - Kairyuka ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
"Babeh, you're giving me a chemical erection"
#37 - anon (08/16/2013) [-]
>Chemical reaction: a number of substances (compounds or pure elements) becoming a different number of subtances (at least one of them being different to the former).
MFW pain doesn't involve a chemical reaction, but only an electrical current through nerves, powered by Na/K.
******* retard makes a jokes and screws it from the base...

Well there are electrical synapses with gap junctions, but they don't play any major role in the transmission of pain, not that I'm aware of anyway.

how do you know when you're in love?

that triangle doesn't have romantic love
just friendship, family, and sexual intimacy
User avatar #81 to #77 - iHAXnoobs (08/16/2013) [-]
also you're implying that because some psychologist said something that it's automatically true
#83 to #81 - hankhillofthe (08/16/2013) [-]
I would argue that romantic love could easily be fit in to the Love/belonging area, and is implied with "Sexual Intimacy".

I would also argue that on matters of psychology, it's more that I would trust a well thought-out theory from someone who's spent their life on it than some dude on FJ that told me love is dumb.

No matter who's right, that comment was retarded.

pain is not a chemical reaction, its electrical pulses in the nerves, it is essentially an electrical/biomechanical action, just like moving your leg, its a physical interaction

Physics > chemistry

your move chem fag
User avatar #78 to #65 - iHAXnoobs (08/16/2013) [-]
that's not physics
it's biology
User avatar #82 to #65 - thelastamerican ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
The electricity you're talking about is generated biologically. It's bioelectricity. So, yeah. It's still a chemical reaction in your nerve endings. Then when the electrical pulse gets to your brain it's decoded as pain by a chemical reaction again.

Also, checkmate.
User avatar #105 to #82 - kristovsky (08/17/2013) [-]
it is the passage of electricity, it follows equations dictated by physics

like everything.

User avatar #106 to #105 - thelastamerican ONLINE (08/18/2013) [-]
Well, yeah. In the broadest sense it's physics. In a narrower sense it falls under chemistry. In a much narrower sens it falls under biology. If you really want to you can make just about everything fall back to physics, but the electricity was produced, directed by, and decoded by a biological process.

just like atheists. they simply dont believe in anything, until the feel the hell in the afterlife. but at that time, it will be too late for them. The truth will prevail. Just enjoy your life for now.

User avatar #87 to #34 - thebritishguy (08/16/2013) [-]
Atheists don't believe in nothing, they believe that you should **** off because they don't like exploitation. The reason why a lot of secularists are passionate about trying to stop religious influence is because they don't like people using fear to control people.
