Also there is a whole world of foreign music out there too. With and without words.

I am moving to China at the end of this year and have discovered a huge amount of awesome new music because of it. Particularly with electronic (that I was never originally a big fan of). They have basically gone through the US/UK's past 50 years of music in the last decade and its spectacular.
User avatar #73 to #1 - Mortuus (08/09/2013) [-]
Why would you want to move to China?
User avatar #87 to #73 - carnagejc (08/09/2013) [-]
Well, I am going to Hong Kong but it can be difficult to get a work VISA so could be going across to Shenzhen.

Want a taste of somewhere entirely different for a while and I like the language/culture.
User avatar #259 to #87 - Mortuus (08/09/2013) [-]
I can understand that. I hope you have fun.
User avatar #89 to #1 - dillistone (08/09/2013) [-]
ay dude, I lived in Shangai for 7 years, was just wondering what artists you knew for electronic music from China?

I only know these two dubstep guys from Macau ha
User avatar #95 to #89 - carnagejc (08/09/2013) [-]
Check out some of Dead J's music, "architecture inspired" electronic.

Admittedly ive just really gone through playlists/browsing youtube etc. I am not good at remembering names with English music not to mention Chinese ha.

However, rap/hiphop is one of my favourite genres of music generally so if you like it you should look up "香港地 Edison Chen ft HanJin, Paisley, MC 仁". HanJin basically makes it, Edison being good too and Paisley is a pretty voice+face. MC 仁 final section I am not a fan of but to each his own.

24Herbs is one of the best Canto artists for rap/hiphop but they are very hit/miss for me. I LOVE some of their songs and hate others. Listen to "No Brothers" by them, and pro tip they are saying "Heng Dai" not Hentai ;)

User avatar #98 to #89 - carnagejc (08/09/2013) [-]
Oh and forgot to say, for Electronic look for Mandarin/mainland artists.

For rap/hip hop look at HK/Canto artists.

What were you doing in Shanghai?
User avatar #313 to #98 - dillistone (08/09/2013) [-]
Studying! General education ****

You working in HK?
User avatar #321 to #313 - carnagejc (08/09/2013) [-]
Ah fair enough, and yeah hoping to. I am basically taking an extended holiday there and hoping to get myself work/VISA and stay.

Ideally i'd like to teach English privately, it would be more relaxed & enjoyable and i'd earn more but I think im going to have to work for another company to get the VISA.
User avatar #322 to #321 - dillistone (08/09/2013) [-]
You could always try get a student visa? take a year "studying" chinese at a uni. They're pretty easy to get if I remember correctly, in Shanghai we had a lot of people doing that. Uni for like 2-3 hours to show their face then work. Its all a bit illegal but ayy

I know mainland china is always looking for english teachers! lots of tiger parents with their pockets lined

But seriously if you need help or got any questions just let me know!

I don't normally like to recommend music to people because the most surefire way for someone to like something is to not be pressured by someone else to listen to it. That said, if you like this, their new album is superb. "My God is the Sun" is the most mainstream song, but "Smooth Sailing" is sick as well.
User avatar #309 to #306 - Greevon ONLINE (08/09/2013) [-]
Nah, I like being recommended music. I like most genres.
But I will return the favor. More people should know about Avantasia with how popular Edguy is.

User avatar #79 - delphine (08/09/2013) [-]
and there was some crappy ass music made way back when too. many people fail to see The Beatles's early music as shallow because they had such a long career and their music evolved so much. But their early stuff written to be catchy and radio-friendly, just like today's mainstream pop music. But let's look at some of their early lyrics, shall we?

Baby's good to me you know,
She's happy as can be you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
Baby says she's mine you know,
She tells me all the time you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
I'm so glad..._

Taken out of context, I think these lyrics could fit right in with Bieber. Not trying to diss The Beatles here or even say the song is bad (it's still a catchy tune and i don't mind listening to it). But you can't read these lyrics and say the words aren't shallow.
User avatar #239 to #79 - tauntaun (08/09/2013) [-]
but the beatles wrote their music and performed it. that is a lot more than what can be said about today's pop artists
User avatar #324 to #239 - delphine (08/09/2013) [-]
True, but just because someone writes their own music doesn't make it good. Taylor Swift writes her own stuff, but I'd hardly call her a gifted songwriter. It's not wrong to sing someone else's music as long as they're honest about it. Some people are incredibly talented lyricists yet can't sing their way out of a paper bag. Likewise, other people might have an amazing voice but lack the creativity to write their own music.

It's been that way for ages. Orchestras don't write their own parts, they play music written by a composer. It's a collaboration, and that is an art in and of itself.

Think power, epic, symphonic, melodic and overall grand. Like Blind Guardian, Rhapsody and Timeless miracle. I have always held the softest of spots for such styles of metal. I pretty much like all styles of metal but death, trash, black, classic and some heavy. Some calmer folksy styles, drinking songs, enchanting voices for when i have headache or just want to listen to something calm.. Oh **** i love it all, just send a lot of titles my way
