hi. . Would any of you still watch movies without Visual Effects? Respect Visual Effect Artists.. If movies didn't have special effects then they wouldn't be behind massive green screens or cuddling blue toys

Yeah they'd be given heavy makeup, movies used to make some impressive masks before cgi was used.

I'd rally love to see what Hollywood could actually do without using computers for special effects today.

Watch old movies.

Watch The Fall. Besides color correction, it's a cinematic masterpiece without special effects. Just watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean.

Thank you. I will definitely look into that.

I will always like practical effects better.

Don't get me wrong, I love Avatar, Jurassic Park, LOTR, et cetera.

But in my heart Ridley Scott's Alien and John Carpenter's The Thing will always scare me, yet cgi-created monsters can't even rustle me.

Which is why the dilophosaurus and velociraptors scare me worse than the t-rex.

Since the t-rex, while having a couple bowel-shatteringly terrifying scenes with a puppet, was for the most part cg.

Yeah, the truth about the velocoraptors was that, in some scene, were actual peaple inside a custom costume, making their movements more bionic, and more awsome!
Sorry for the horrible misspell

I agree with you, but there's something about the original Star Wars trilogy that I love. Just knowing that they managed to invent all of that **** amazes me.

Yeah sometimes it doesn't even feel like it was made that way, so much diligence. Respect for that. I loved Coraline. I also enjoyed Knox's Korner movies.

If movies didn't have special effects, they'd put more effort into creating real environments and costumes, and it'd be so much more awesome

I was thinking the whole time that, yeah, I would like to watch movies that focused on these actor's and the talents and the script, rather than visual candy.
User avatar #106 to #103 - frenzysalem ONLINE (08/08/2013) [-]
that's why i think most movies since the 90's aren't nearly as good as the ones from a long time ago. they didn't have all of these fancy special effects so actors had to actually, you know, be decent. now all you have to do to make an award winning movie is have attractive people who can read lines and make lots of special effect explosions. it's dull, boring, and there's just no passion in it anymore. People are amazed and astounded by crappy actors of today when they've never even heard of Marlon Brando or Peter Lorre simply because "black and white movies are boring."
#156 to #106 - danruaul (08/08/2013) [-]
Yeah, just a firearm or burning a building is enough. Let the actors do the rest. Nobody these days can outdo the young Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver or Dear Hunter. Culture has become dumbed down, even when it purportedly handles intellectual subjects. But maybe popular culture has it's purpose, and we can find elemental, probing dramas from other sources.
User avatar #70 - MikeLit (08/08/2013) [-]
Visual effects are not limited to green screens and CGI.

Personally, I prefer films that minimize the usage of these tools. The original trilogy of Star Wars was filmed in exotic locations around the Earth to depict the different planets. In the prequels, everything was filmed in the same 10 ft x 10 ft room in Hollywood that was painted green. Take your pick.

How can actor perform in a believable manner when he cannot even see what his surroundings are supposed to be?
User avatar #65 - seriouslyblack (08/08/2013) [-]
yes i would watch a movie without visual effects

because then they would use more practical effects which can create better and more effective horror in horror movies (the evil dead original and remake, the thing) and sometimes more realistic-looking creatures (jurassic park, the thing)

There is, just in some scenes there has to be a ton of movement and they risk breaking it or it would be too much hassle to put it on for a 10 second scene, so they digitally add it. See? here they are putting it on
