I'm curious about something, how old are most people when they first read LOTR? I'm wondering because the post talk about high school and I read it when I was 10. It feels a bit young.

anon 'cus this sounds like I'm trying to brag.

I very first read it at about 11, but didn't really understand much of it, after watching the films at 15, went back, re-read it properly, everything just clicked

I was introduced to Tolkien's works before I even began school. The Hobbit was read to me, and I tried to stumble through Lord of the Rings on my own, out of curiosity. For a kid it was confusing, but I loved the story in the Hobbit so much, I wanted to know what happened next. I'd say I formally read it and understood it entirely by 10 or before.

I was a big reader in elementary and our school library had the huge red unabridged trilogy. So in fifth grade, maybe age 10 or 11, I picked up the damn thing and just read through it.
My thoughts as I read? I had 0 idea what was happening, as it was pretty much the hardest book around. I just loved reading so I went through the words, pages, chapters. Somehow near the very last chapter something just clicked and the entire book suddenly made sense to me.
Have yet to watch the films in their entireties but I know I definitely should....
