Steven Hillenburg simply shifted the title of "Creator" to Vincent Waller in 2005. He's still an Executive Producer (As far to my knowledge at least, feel free to completely destroy what I've just said).

After the movie the creator sold it or something, and moved on.
This is why it's never been the same, and technically everything after is just filler.

The movie is where the story ends.

Ah I agree. I think after the movie they made Spongebob and Patrick get a little more intimate, have some subliminal messages, and some pretty gross scenes.

For me, Spongebob ended when Ernest Borgnine died. No more Mermaidman=no more watchy.
