It's called special effects

No. Magic is real.
User avatar #32 to #31 - baaltomekk (08/03/2013) [-]
If you know, then why do you ask?
User avatar #33 to #32 - TarnRazor (08/03/2013) [-]
I didn't know. I just hoped this was real and there was a scientific explanation behind it.
User avatar #34 to #33 - baaltomekk (08/03/2013) [-]
I gave you a scientific explanation. Remember the special effects?
User avatar #35 to #34 - TarnRazor (08/03/2013) [-]
Yes but it was lacking the "hoped it was real" part.

The substance appears to be a rather fluent liquid. But in actuality, it's a viscous colloid of aqueous KMnO4 (potassium permanganate). The gel-like dispersion of this ionic solid throughout the water exponentially increases the water's cohesion (the H2O molecules stick to each other like a solid while remaining in the liquid state). Look up colligative properties.

The "firmer" substance retains the shape of the glass because the structure wants to minimize its free energy. It's easier for it to stay in shape than to settle out due to the water's cohesion. However, a slight disturbance will cause it to change state and *snap* it settles.

So in this case is the glass internally coated with the substance or is it mixed in with the water?
User avatar #85 to #29 - lordreginald (08/03/2013) [-]
It's magic. I ain't gotta 'splain **** .

3. Wait a while

Profit if you hate your roommate.
User avatar #18 - yulster (08/03/2013) [-]
My brother did this to me, but he used a glass so I knew there was water... what I did was simply find a piece of paper, slip it under it again, drag across the table for a bit and then lift gently and hold the piece of paper with ur hand, bring it to the sink and BAM ************ , NOTHING SPILLED!!
#62 to #18 - ohmyford (08/03/2013) [-]
Wouldn't it be impossible to slip a piece of paper back under the cup?
User avatar #89 to #62 - yulster (08/03/2013) [-]
try it...just like do it slowly... use the paper from the printer (it is a bit thicker)
#45 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]
*and*

I tried to "nad hold" it. Long story short I'm out $456.83 and my cat is stuck in the toaster. Tell me what I did wrong.
User avatar #49 - lolwatthe ONLINE (08/03/2013) [-]
Do this constantly to get your roommate or sibling or otherwise very paranoid, then when it's around midnight one random day you then do this to all the dishes but leave the water out of all but a few.
#42 - webadbaby (08/03/2013) [-]

I used to cut out most ridiculous looking faces out of newpapers and put it near bed of my friends so they see them when they wake up, or hide it somwhere for them to discover.

Hmm
#90 to #76 - ohmyford (08/03/2013) [-]
It's true, I just tried it, although the paper part is tricky, it has to be secured to the cup firmly and it can't be a big piece of paper, or when you hold it, the paper will make a bowl shape and the water will flow out
#55 - sparkysparkybooman (08/03/2013) [-]
omg this is like so totally not old and unoriginal at all!
