These people actually have a point. For example, on the rare occasion that fat person is the protagonist in a major motion picture their character is usually buffoonish and any comedy/drama around the charcter is weight related.

The point is that they never get substantive roles, just cheap gimmicky ones. If they get a substantive role, it's as a third-tier auxiliary role. See Dot Marie Jones
#30 to #29 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]
Well their body type does limit their roles, they can't be some Navy seal or a special agent, they're not going to be the stud in some romance film, there just isn't a wide (hue) range of roles for fat people.

At least ONE company is oversexualizing the male characters now too.

Capcom leads the charge. If you do it with one, do it with all.

That seems more machioization. Trying to find a good example, but sexualization aimed towards women tends to be a bit... softer.

Are you familiar with the concept of the bishounen? That's a subtype of male meant to cater to a female audience. While not all girls are into that, it's pretty popular considering how often those traits show up in female fanart.
User avatar #56 to #55 - hawaiianhappysauce (08/03/2013) [-]
Interesting. Though I don't think that follows most of the final fantasy games. I didn't think Sahz, Basch, and Auron were anything like that, and the ones who did had the most annoying personalities ever (Tidus, Vaan, Hope) or act retarded (Wakka, Snow).

The gender issues in video games is not equal, when it comes to strictly body-shape and physical attractiveness, yes, both males and females are objectified in the same way.

But more often than not, the busty female character is pretty much damn near useless, or overpowered as **** but needs the male's guidence because she's 'naive' or something.
While male characters are 9 times out of 10 portrayed as heroic, strong, smart and honorable.

As far as the physical stuff goes, yep, both women and men are equally as objectified, but when it comes to the other things, like personality, strength and role, its a whole other can of worms.

tl;dr - **** feminazi's.
User avatar #83 to #68 - Zeigh ONLINE (08/03/2013) [-]
Many games are marketed towards males of varying age for the simple reason that they're the majority so they'll make more money.
It's really that simple.
#87 to #83 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]
That circular logic. Games are marketed for men because men are in the majority of game players and men are the majority of the game players because games are marketed toward men.

Point is, they're rarely going to risk deviating from a successful trend, in other words from their perspective : Don't fix what isn't broken.

I can't wait for the industry to implode on itself and be born anew.
#82 to #68 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]
Are they really "equally" objectified? I don't play many games, but off the top of my head I can think of a lot of ugly male game characters (Voldo, Dhalsim, Zangif, Heihachi, and on and on and on), but only, like, one ugly female. It's really quite far from equal. There is such a broad range of male characters, and virtually no range of female characters.
#73 to #68 - IAMDIZZYONFANTA (08/03/2013) [-]
Pretty much. How many escort quests are a useless female character? And how many are a useless male? Appearance doesn't bother me. A girl character having big tits is awesome, as well as a male character being buffed to Hugh Jackman levels. It's the roles they usually take in the games that are iffy.
User avatar #77 to #73 - emokoneko (08/03/2013) [-]
But I don't like the huge tits or the ridiculous muscles...>.> Well, not when it's to the point the characters look ridiculous.

But, then again, I don't play video games for the eye candy.
#90 to #77 - IAMDIZZYONFANTA (08/03/2013) [-]
Fair enough. It depends on the game I'm playing. Halo? Not interested in eye candy, the main dude is in a shapeless suit. In fact, the transfer of Cortana from "semi-androgynous AI" to "BOOBS" was a little irritating. But if I'm playing something not serious at all like a ****** JRPG then eye candy is all good.

What bothers the **** out of me is in games like that one new Resident Evil game where Chris is all loaded up with gear and a vest and earpiece and looks seriously over-ready for combat, and then ******* Jill is just naked and painted blue with a couple straps. What is Capcom run by 12 year olds? Then there's that other chick who is literally wearing a Lady Gaga outfit.
#46 to #21 - nerdforlife (08/03/2013) [-]
I'm pretty sure Capcom was making up for the lack of sexy in all the previous Resident Evil games but I'm also pretty sure they got Michael Bay to give them ideas for the visuals in Resident Evil 5 (explosions and tits and guns).
User avatar #26 to #21 - flemsdfer (08/03/2013) [-]
The last resident evil game I played was like that. Chick literally made nothing but sexual innuendoes "Just because there are zombies doesn't mean you can stare at my ass!" Bitch I'm bleeding out on the ground like I give a **** about you. and she was wearing stiletto heels. All the time. Running from zombies and doing navy seal diving and **** ....in stiletto heels. It actually pissed me off how much sexual catering that was done in that game.
User avatar #69 to #26 - demandsgayversion (08/03/2013) [-]
I don't see why there has to be sexual catering at all. Mass Effect having a variance (although not at first) of romance options was a good idea; it got you attached to the characters which made a more immersive story. But to have tits flopping around is just ridiculous. Look at the comparison above, for example. A buff dude isn't the same as a chick with gigantic floppy oblong tits. It would have to have a horse dong flopping around, and as far as I've seen, only 1 game has actually done that: Dante's Inferno. And that was Satan anyway.
#32 - ataeru (08/03/2013) [-]
I really hate it when people pull this ******** off. You can't just say it's a power fantasy for one gender, but an unrealistic expectation blah blah blah for the other. They are inadvertently being sexist by doing this. Double sexist especially for this game, since both genders have their share of self confident characters. plus, they're complaining about a ******* video game, a FANTASY setting, that doesn't effect them in the slightest. There will be critisim for products, but it doesn't insult your body weight. They should really calm the **** down.
User avatar #60 - BrotherDeath (08/03/2013) [-]
Let me make this easy for you:

They are trying to appeal to their demographic. And that's fine.

The reviewer did about two lines on the art style and depiction of women, less than a fifth of the overall review. She still gave it a 6/10 I believe.
#64 to #60 - delivering (08/03/2013) [-]
6.5, but that's besides the point.

She's allowed not to like the artstyle/graphics. Perfectly fine.

The problem here is that it's a women that said these things.

When the dude from Kotaku called the artist for the game a horny 14 year old, there was far less controversy.

It's weird, really.
User avatar #8 - makedonski (08/03/2013) [-]
How about this:
I don't find blobs attractive. I don't have to like you just because you're a female. Oh, you don't shave your armpits? Fine, just don't plan on ever having sex.
User avatar #20 to #8 - masdercheef (08/03/2013) [-]

#78 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]

#23 - voidherald (08/03/2013) [-]
The idea that male video game characters are 'sexualized' is kind of silly, as video games aren't actually catering to people sexually attracted to said males. Muscle-bound protagonists are much more a male power fantasy than they are eye-candy for those attracted to men.
User avatar #79 to #23 - neutralgray (08/03/2013) [-]
You are very correct, sir. Men aren't objectified in games. We're idolized.

Most males just don't want to willing admit that video gaming has been nothing but a boy's club for a long time now and now that girls are breaking in they get their knickers in a wedgie and go complain about it on the internet.
