When I was about 14, I really wanted to play Mass Effect, but my dad was very strict, so I had to prepare a presentation so that he would let me get a game with one sex scene in it. After I brought it home, he came and checked every five minutes, expecting some sort of pornographic content. Instead, he just saw a whole lot of nerdy aliens.

That's why they had these commercials for it, that are totally not aimed at teenagers.

Think, who is going to be watching TV leading up to release?
The teenager/kid who is at school for 7 hours a day, or the adult with a job and social life that has to get groceries and **** ?
The adult is going to get it on principle alone, the kid has to be convinced because their parents buy them like 3 games a year.

#247 to #16 - teranin (08/02/2013) [-]
yeah, because as an adult I didn't find those commercials funny at all. I didn't think anything positive from their clever use of humor regarding parental viewpoints on violent videogames or anything, so clearly those commercials were only aimed at the demographic they were referencing with the comedy, and not at anyone who could think it was funny.

My parents always let me buy what ever game I want to, as long as I have the money.

They've built up this system where I get a lot of privileges, like weekly pocket money, being allowed to stay up at night for a long time, be outside with my friends at night, etc.

But, they trust I have responsibility, and that I know when I've reached my limit, so if I ever do something largely irresponsible they simply take away my privileges.

i think that sex is actually not as bad as violence. In America we are very strict about sexual content (you can't really see it on TV unless you pay for it.) but you can go on any movie channel and see someone getting their head chopped off or their guts ripped out in any horror movie. Also, every parent wants their ids to go out into the world, get married, and have sex so that they can have grand-kids. I don't think any sane parents want their kids to go out and kill or hurt someone.
User avatar #200 to #106 - tylosaurus (08/02/2013) [-]
Good point, but as we know it, knowing of sex early makes kid forget they are kids.
This might have happened through out history, but I think it's overwhelming what kids know about sex nowadays at different ages.
Cocky bastards. I mean, I saw a ******* documentary and in there there was an interview of some little boys on a school trip. He spoke about sneaking in and ******* the girls and other stuff like that.

but I guess that isn't information from videogames, so I guess that makes it sort of pointless.
User avatar #300 to #200 - xdeathspawnx (08/02/2013) [-]
yeah that is true. I don't necessarily want more sex in video games and movies, I just think that it should be treated on the same level as violence.

On the topic of censorship, can someone please explain to me in what possible realm of logic sex is more taboo than violence?

In Prototype 2 I can slice someone in half or consume them and take on their appearance; In porn, people imitate the act of procreating without actually procreating.

If one's a perfectly normal human function to create life and the other is performing an act of violence sometimes so severe it gains infamy even among gamers (manhunt)

I'm not against violence or sex in games/movies or anything, this is just something that confuses me.
User avatar #215 to #118 - nsfwbrowserv (08/02/2013) [-]
I think people just assume that suddenly every kid will turn into a ******* prostitute, or become sadistic and be labeled with an "abnormal sexual desire".

Religion it's a big fat pound when making politics, so practically the one who decides what's "moral" and what's not It's church. And I guess you can figure out the rest
User avatar #121 to #119 - jamesrustler (08/02/2013) [-]
Very true, I understand where you're going with it too. Thanks, I mean I was aware that religious influence on social and political values is profound I just hadn't considered it to be the cause in this case, which was a bit naive of me. Thanks mate.
#130 to #121 - kanedam (08/02/2013) [-]
it isnt after all...
there's enough other countries with as much religious influence that still dont see sex as something worse than violence.

that's just something typically american... showing a nipple is worse than a headshot. that logic applies to almost no other censorship from other countries.
and also: religion also forbids one to go on a manhunt or slay thousands of people down... like in gta for example.

so i wouldnt take that too much into consideration
User avatar #133 to #130 - jamesrustler (08/02/2013) [-]
It's not just American, it's also the case in England.

I understand where you're coming from but I think he was referring more to the Christian influence on the development of culture, particularly the catholic church which hates sex like the plague unless it involves 9 year old boys.
#135 to #133 - kanedam (08/02/2013) [-]
nope thats not true.
in almost every comedy-series from england you see a whole bunch of naked people... really a lot!
it's not considered to be something that needs to be censored.

and in the states aren't there more evangelicals than roman-catholics? (yeah there is a difference, you cant just say catholic church because catholic has a whole lot of divided groups... and really a lot of them dont listen and dont care about the pope)
User avatar #154 to #135 - jamesrustler (08/02/2013) [-]
I know, I am English, and that's an entirely separate example as in English comedy it's largley about the ludicrous nature of the situation such as Monty Python or A Bit of Fry and Laurie, whereas I meant actual sexual depictions like people having sex, think HBO level.

That's true, I hadn't considered that.
#156 to #154 - kanedam (08/02/2013) [-]
it has more to do with the prudent nature of the anglo-saxon culture than the churches...

i mean, just take the joke of women on the beach in europe without bikini-tops at the beach... its really normal. you got whole beaches where you're not allowed (or at least it's not polite) to wear clothes.

but i cant really say anything since i only know the european cultures... never been to america
