Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door is probably my favorite game of all time. Easily the best RPG combat I've ever played. I will always approve of any mention of it. More people need to play that **** .

I wish I could find a good ROM of it. Had it, got about halfway through the second level, and it crashes every time. So sad...I loved the first one and I really want to play this one. Pic completely unrelated.

A great game no doubt, ive played through it multiple times, but you have to admit, it does lack challenge. even still, loved all my moments with that game. Bobbery master race ftw.
User avatar #63 to #52 - indecisivejew (07/31/2013) [-]
Seriously? Lacks challenge? Completing the pit of 100 trials was and still is one of my proudest moments in gaming. And that final boss was no walk in the park either. Although I suppose if you're versed in turn based RPGs it would be a lot easier. I wasn't when I did my first playthrough.
#67 to #63 - ichitoten (07/31/2013) [-]
Well, maybe i exxagurated, on the first playthrough i had trouble, especially with the shadow queen, but 2nd time round i knew what i was doing, and pit of 100 trials isn't totally without challenge so, i take that back, partly. most bosses were easy though.. except for Grubba (3rd star boss) i always found him to be an asshole.
User avatar #70 to #67 - indecisivejew (07/31/2013) [-]
Grubba was an asshole, but he also had one of my favorite boss theme songs of any game.

I replayed that game recently.

The game forces you to backtrack constantly and re-fight monsters you've already defeated. The game is nearly unbearable because of that.
#15 to #7 - captnpl (07/30/2013) [-]
That's why you get the badge that lets you kill low level enemies without going into the combat screen.
User avatar #9 to #7 - indecisivejew (07/30/2013) [-]
First of all, there really isn't very much back tracking at all. Have you ever even played a JRPG before? Second of all, you do know that you don't have to fight everything you encounter, right? You can just avoid the enemy, and even if it starts a battle, you can just run away.

Was it a better sequel than partners in time? Because that was not a very good sequel.
User avatar #8 to #6 - indecisivejew (07/30/2013) [-]
The Mario and Luigi series is actually a separate series from Paper Mario. Both are very good and very creative, but you're right, Partners in Time was a very weak entry.
#118 to #8 - madimcfaceache (07/31/2013) [-]
Im just gonna but in here and say I actually enjoyed Partners in Time
but it could just be because it was one of the first games i got on my ds and nostalgia is hitting me
dont kill me
User avatar #10 to #8 - hirollin (07/30/2013) [-]
Yeah I know they are separate. Did the thousand year door have anything different from the original? Partners in time was the same combat system with a similar and equally terrible storyline. The combat system was the exact same thing as the original except the babies replaced some of the actions/animations. Completely disappointing. I loved paper mario, but I'v always put off the thousand year door cas i'v been worried that it will be so bad or boring that I'll hate it and never play paper mario again.

Yeah, I have to agree with indecisivejew. TYD was the best in the series and in my opinion one of the best games on the gamecube, if not the best. The game has a darker, edgier, or as Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation put it, anarchic humor to it compared to the first, which I absolutely love. If you liked the first Paper Mario game, play TYD. It not only adds to the original, but also improves it.

#94 to #18 - John Cena (07/31/2013) [-]
Also, if anyone wonders, the TYD can be just as enjoyable if you haven't played the first. There are noticeable connections, but the plot remains independent. Everything's great: story, characters, scenes, gameplay, audiovisuals, combat mechanism, minor arc stories, etc. If only my dad didn't sell it at a garage sale for under a buck.
User avatar #12 to #10 - indecisivejew (07/30/2013) [-]
Why would you be worried about that? Did you look into the game at all? It was the best received of any game in the franchise. It took the already great combat system and refined it and added on interactions with an audience, more stylish moves, more special abilities, and more timed perfect execution bonuses. Every move for mario and all his partners has its own timing based mini game, and there are a ton more moves than in the first game, especially because of all the badges. There are also a lot more enemy types, but the biggest draw to 2 over 1 is the amazingly clever environments, characters, and dialogue. If you liked the first one at all, the second one is just a huge improvement on it with a better combat system, better environments, and a better story.
User avatar #13 to #10 - indecisivejew (07/30/2013) [-]
You shouldn't play Sticker Star though. That one really did ruin Paper Mario. I mean, the Paper Mario on the Wii wasn't great, but it was different. Sticker Star tried to be the same, and it was lesser because of it, a lot like Partners in Time.
#31 to #13 - imgood (07/30/2013) [-]
I absolutely love all of the paper mario's including sticker star, you do have to realise that the DS is a small system with limited capabilities so sticker star had to be squished down, though the new combat system with 1 use stickers instead of badges is a little meh, the overall gameplay and re-view of oldschool mario style is really great.
#106 to #31 - John Cena (07/31/2013) [-]
To me sticker star didnt fit into to the series.( spoilers ahead)
Majority of the characters had barely any personality, ms. mowz alone had more personality that all other characters jn sticker star.kirsti was so annoying that I was happy when she left. The humor was very bland compared to other games of the series. Bosses could be made so very easy by finding the right sticker which just killed the Creativity of the bosses. ill admit the blooper boss going with beat of the background music was amazing but the fact that you could beat him so easily was a bummerHe'll i found myself using the same three stickers for a big chunk of the game. sure i get they had to make some limitations but It just did not feel like a paper Mario game. It felt like a Mario RPGs that they just happened to slap paper Mario title to it. It lacked the world previously given by other paper Mario games.
Tl;dr sticker star was a very meh game that failed to live up touts series
User avatar #32 to #31 - indecisivejew (07/30/2013) [-]
My biggest problem was the absence of partners, or any characters really. I thought the combat was fine, but getting rid of worthwhile people to talk to was what really irked me. Plus going back to the traditional WORLD TWO HAS TO BE A DESSERT AND WORLD 3 HAS TO BE ICE THEMED instead of the creative locations in the previous three games was a let down.
#107 to #32 - nopenotme (07/31/2013) [-]
Exactly. No partners was just horrible... And yes, the lack of characters. There was almost nothing to do outside of the main story. Every character was either a shopkeeper, a toad that you'd rescued/helped somewhere, or a toad that you'd eventually have to rescue/help somewhere.
I sincerely hope that they go back to the formula that truly made Paper Mario and Paper Mario: TYD so great. Keep the combat, keep the partners (I'd prefer the way they've been in those two games with the varying species and such, but I'd even settle for Super Paper Mario partner-types), and add back all the extra content that made the games feel full and complete. Sticker Star was so empty...
But in reality, I would kill for a Super Paper Luigi.

Pic related. It's how the entirety of Sticker Star felt. Minus the partner.
#33 to #32 - imgood (07/30/2013) [-]
World 3 is always a water world you uneducated **** . Anyways yeah, no partner system is saddening but you do still have that compnaion sticker, also it would be awks to collect 2 sets of stickers for a pet..... and I meant more the world overveiw and level select, brings back the memories.

He had no defense, so using the endless stomp attack, along with Lady Bows repeated smack attack would knock him down quick.

Whenever he had the small clouds out, I would use the multi-stomp to hit everybody. Since those clouds had low hp, they would die and HnP would gain minimal to no hp.

I ******* love that game, but the thing that made me kinda start to dislike SoR what's the fact that Adam was left behind. Like, are you serious?? He is the best fighter and you take him off? Oh, and why wasn't he in the handheld console??? ******* .
Btw those two bitches... jesus christ almighty talk about overpowered. The problem with them were the jumps, no one did those diagonal jumps and since there is no shadow I had no friggin' idea of where they were gonna land. And you had to love the moment when you were close to punch the lights out of them and they would do a jump backwards.
Even the final boss was easier than them.
But overall, it was a good game, kinda easy, with god tier music.

I will wipe you the **** out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this level, mark my ******* words. You think you can get away with saying that **** to me over the nintendo? Think again, ****** . I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare shell. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed sliding, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United Koopas Bowser's Castle and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable plumber-ass off the face of your world, you little man. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” fireballs were about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your ******* star. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you overpowered hero. I will slide with fury all over you and you will trip on it. You’re ******* dead, plumber.

The first one when it came out was amazing! It really had virtually no flaws for a true turn based rpg made of paper. And the thousand year door only improved in every way. SPM lost the turn based fighting but still was very entertaining with a driven story. The new one on 3ds has mixed reviews and though full of content seems to lack the sparkles of the past. Paper mario on 64 is my most favorited game of all time and ive played it countless times when I was young.

Before I bought my N64, i used an emulator. It doesn't give near the good experience, but nice at letting you play the games. If you wanna test it out try out Cool Rom.

They got tons of N64 Roms and multiple emulators. Plus other old systems or as new as the older DS.
User avatar #119 to #108 - bighairyfart (08/01/2013) [-]
Yeah, I never had a N64 growing up, so I use emulators. I still haven't played much, just the two Zelda titles, Super Mario 64, & Super Smash Bros.

Check this Out.

I volunteered at a Salvation Army Thrift Store for school service project, and finished all their work early so all we had left was "test" their electronics and games to see if they worked. Found a N64 there with 2 controllers and Majoras Mask. Came back afterwards and bought them all for just $20.

The N64 itself was crap, had lots of issues like audio bugging out or not connecting video to TV sometimes. It worked which was nice.

Fast forward 2 months, I am at a Retro Gaming store selling tons of N64, and i look to the right to find a gorgeous, marvelous, spaghetti-pouring-out-of-mouth sight ever. Limited Edition Green Tinted Transparent N64. Salesman traded my crappy N64 and a gunked up controller For the Limited Edition N64 with its Limited Edition Controller for just $10 more.

I also got a PS Vita from there for just $80. My new favorite store.

I could probably go and get one for like $50, but I'm trying to save up a bit for the upcoming Wii U/3DS games. Also, how the **** do you hold that controller? It has 3 handles, but I only have 2 hands...
User avatar #125 to #122 - mormon (08/02/2013) [-]
Or, if you're a real manly man, wrap your dick around the middle handle and alternate and erection to move the joystick.

But you know, gotta be a real manly man to do that.
#124 to #122 - mormon (08/02/2013) [-]
Well, the game developers were pretty cool, so for most games you don't need anything on the left handle except the trigger.

So: Left Hand - Middle Handle and Right Hand - Right Handle
