I'm not sure that's true. If he was intended to have a full fight scene, and it was improvised, then why did he have a gun loaded with blanks? Why didn't any of the extras laugh?

That sounds potentially unsafe. But this was before the Brandon Lee incident, wasn't it? I'm sure there's some strict precautions since then.
