Indian is an old ignorant word for Native American.
#35 to #23 - mistafishy (07/22/2013) [-]
FFFFAAAAAAALLLLLLLSSSSEEEEE...

It gets confusing, but because many native tribes never identified themselves ethnically other than the fact that they were people, Indian is an acceptable term for some groups of who we officially call American Indians.

I had a friend who took this really hard because they are 1/4 Native American and when I called them a American Indian, she went bonkers with all the Native American crap.

Just thought I'd beat something of what i know into the minds of this thread.

I doubt any Redman is gonna go get his wompum stick for using the wrong name with em. They're all hitting that peace pipe so they usually dgaf. I know that calling a Seminole a Native American got me laughed at. Try calling them chief, they all like that, all of them. If they don't give them some beads, they're crazy for that stuff.

That example, and what you've said to me only gives the impression that your tribe is very violent and not understanding in the slightest.
#118 to #87 - rhetoricalfunny (07/22/2013) [-]
Please don't think of us like that.

Alot of tribes have many social issues, and the youth are generally quite violent, but this is usually because of a sortof snowball effect of the residential school system.

You might know it as assimilation, but having a mother who was there, it was the definition of genocide.

Anyway, Colombus though he landed in India so he called us Indians. The term is incorrect 100%. Some take offense to it, some don't. I personally don't get hung up on it and just correct people when they say it.
User avatar #119 to #118 - flemsdfer ONLINE (07/22/2013) [-]
Just to be clear, what might I know as assimilation?
User avatar #120 to #119 - rhetoricalfunny (07/22/2013) [-]
Well then.

Basically, in the beginning, (not sure how America went about it, although I'm sure it was pretty damn similar.)

Basically, "the white man's burden" they were trying to "civilize" the indians. By destroying their culture. They emancipated children from their families and forced them into schools where they weren't allowed to speak their language, or practice their culture.

This was an attempt to civilize them, as the white man's burden puts it.

But the white man's burden was a load of ********* . Really it was a guise to justify killing them en mass. (This happened in most other colonized countries.) Actually civilizing them was secondary, they didn't care, because what they really wanted was the indigenous populations gone.

My mother lost hearing in one of her ears because she froze when she was called on to answer a question.
More than half of the children who attended the residential schools died.
User avatar #121 to #120 - flemsdfer ONLINE (07/22/2013) [-]
Ah, in school they we referred to it as "manifest destiny". The idea that it was the white man's responsibility to move West, teaching all those he encountered the "correct" way to live.

I disagree with it too. I think there was enough room in the country for both. Sure, the Natives lacked progress (Shooting irons, trains, etc.) but who's right was it to say they needed it?
Nowadays I honestly view the culture as dead (or at least very close to it). I've never personally seen it anywhere but museums and festivals related to such things. It's brought about a common phrase that "The white man is the scourge of the earth"
User avatar #162 to #121 - rhetoricalfunny (07/22/2013) [-]
Native Culture is far from dead, in fact it's very much alive

But it's caught between two forces. One that ultimately renders it obsolete, (see globalization,) meaning our traditional cultures have no place in the world today. And our own, in which we are trying to rediscover that which was lost. Our languages and history.

Aboriginals are perhaps the least represented minorities in North America, and your belief is a testament to that. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, just that it's incorrect.
User avatar #163 to #162 - flemsdfer ONLINE (07/22/2013) [-]
I only have what I see to go by, same as mostly everyone else. Around me has just been no culture whatsoever. Everyone is stupid, drunk, a criminal, or some mix of the three. Sometimes I do wish I could live away from it all.

User avatar #89 to #88 - flemsdfer ONLINE (07/22/2013) [-]
No, but only hearing and witnessing them being so would lean your opinion on them. Hence why I said it gave the impression.

Ah well if you'd like me tell you I could explain why its only 1 in 100 that are like that

User avatar #93 to #90 - flemsdfer ONLINE (07/22/2013) [-]
Well I'm just saying. You tell me to **** off for asking a question (since posting that comment I have been told that columbus gave them the name of Indians as he thought he was in India and that "Indians" don't identify them as such as a whole, but rather just their individual tribes) and then you proceeded to tell me about how you have witnessed one of your people beat the **** out of someone because they mentioned the word Indian.

It doesn't make a good first impression.

Ok, did we adopt the name America from the "Native Americans" or did we get the name from Amerigo Vespucci? In that case, didn't the "Indians" have a name before "Native American" or "Indian"? Perhaps some sort of tribe name? If we have so much respect for the original owners of "America" why don't we learn to identify them by tribe in school? Until then, let me live my blissful life calling them the Pocahontas folk.

Aboriginal
First Nations
Indigenous

Aboriginal people have a plethora of names associated with them. Native American being a quite neutral one which, I find incorrect, yet do not take offense to. In person the best thing you can do is learn the individual tribe's name and refer to the person my that.

The Vegetarian Society, founded in Manchester, UK, in 1847, says that the word "vegetarian" is derived from the Latin word vegetus meaning lively or vigorous.[14] In contrast, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and other standard dictionaries state that the word was formed from the term "vegetable" and the suffix "-arian".[15] The OED writes that the word came into general use after the formation of the Vegetarian Society at Ramsgate in 1847, though it offers two examples of usage from 1839 and 1842.[16] ~ Wikipedia
