While i appreciate what the Beatles did to music, i still find that the music itself is only liked for those reasons, since it's somewhat poor quality overall. They did so much to music, while not being the most skilled at it. Thats rather fascinating
#216 to #201 - mrcinnamon (07/20/2013) [-]
Really? I've always massively enjoyed their music and I started listening to a lot of it before I knew it was even the beatles (like it would come on the radio and I'd think "oh that's an awesome song" and then afterwards I'd be told it was the Beatles.)
User avatar #226 to #216 - daentraya (07/20/2013) [-]
People have different tastes in music, so it's not that great a mystery. It's not bad, just overrated. I just see in this way; If people were to tell their unbiased opinion of the music itself, then it wouldn't be that dahm good. If, for example, the beatles were released today, and people got to hear it before it drowned in the masses of music due to it's mediocrity, they would think little of it.
Music is many things, and can carry many feelings and memories and biases. Strip this off the Beatles, and it's nothing
#250 to #226 - mrcinnamon (07/20/2013) [-]
Hmm interesting take on it. I disagree, I think they would still be liked. Probably not fabulously so because it wouldn't sound exactly modern but I do think it would have a market. I mean when the music first came out it had to find an audience on its own merits and its not like the Beatles were so groundbreakingly influential that everything before hand was Buddy Holly style Rock n' Roll and that the Beatles only became famous because they sounded new and different. I think a lot of people take issue with it today because of how simple a lot of the songs are but that doesn't really bother me.... but you know music as a taste is way more nebulous and harder to examine than movies or literature
User avatar #268 to #250 - daentraya (07/20/2013) [-]
I highly doubt it, tho. I think the same goes for things like star wars if it was released today. It would be a cliche weird scifi story with incest. But i honestly cant say much about, since i never arsed to watch the dahm thing

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Beatles were great crazyass Stallker types.

I hate people who can't stand it when other people don't like their taste in music. I love hardcore, but I understand why people wouldn't like it. I don't like 80's metal, but I can respect that it helped give me music I love. Beatles are alright, but let's face it, they were a pop band at a point. They have some music that sucks. The only band I think everyone would like is Tool, and that's more that they're so diverse that I think there is always going to be at least one Tool song for everyone.

Whenever someone says Nirvana was the greatest band ever, I usually reply with Alice in Chains and they shut up. Results may vary. Talk to your doctor before using Alice in Chains as a reference to win an argument on the greatest band ever. If you experience an argument lasting more than four hours after using the Alice in Chains name drop, kill your "friend" immediately to make him shut the **** up. Nirvana was awesome but they weren't the best. Also, Alice in Chains is my opinion... which I forget I'm not allowed to have.

I understand what you mean, they don't have major complicated riffs or special chord build ups - but I, personally, think they're great and love their music (:

It´s not the fact that they are lacking complicated riffs and chord build ups - Hell, I listen to punk and black metal, too, I can´t complain about the lack of complicity. I just haven´t found a single song of Nirvana that really got me. All their stuff sounds average and boring to me - and I don´t get why they are hyped to be the best Band around...well, opinions I guess...
User avatar #17 to #16 - carthos (07/19/2013) [-]
Yeah I understand, can stand anyone and musical tastes, except for when you give a completely normal opinion and they're like "You're just jeaulous" or "No they suck".
As long as people can have a normal conversation about why they do or don't like a band I can tolerate every style of music.

They mean, theyre over rated for them. Being over rated means you dont understand WHY they get so much praise, or WHY a lot of people like them, as you dont see whats so special about them. Saying something is over rated is pretty valid, most people just miss what it actually means when people say something is over rated.

I know I at least like the lyrics to the songs. Watched Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when I was little because my mom made me watch it, and I really liked all of the songs. And then when Across the Universe came out I watched that too. Really good songs, but I've never actually listened to the Beatles. Also, Steve Martin and Aerosmith in Sgt. Pepper was awesome.

No, but still. A band's gotta being doing something right if they still manage to be relevant today and even be considering as 'the greatest pop band' from time to time.

I mean, I gotta give 'em credit where it's due. The farthest I'll go in terms of old pop music is generally Queen or somesuch. Beatles just doesn't do it for me. I can see why they're still hailed as pretty ******* neato today though.
User avatar #150 to #149 - contradiction (07/20/2013) [-]

User avatar #151 to #150 - doktorandus (07/20/2013) [-]
You can dislike 'em, but you can't deny the impact they had on pop music.

And sadly they are still bucketloads better than the pop music we have today.
Instead of evolve, pop kind of.. regressed it seems. Kinda sad, honestly.
User avatar #174 to #151 - dogwars (07/20/2013) [-]
Though they honestly aren't that great of a band, they opened a lot of doors for a lot of different genera. Songs like Strawberry fields opened up the whole hippie psychedelic movement to it's kind of music, a lot of modern rock stems from songs like Revolution, and pop was already on the road it's on from 50's swing, Paul just helped expand their fan base with lots of poppy, catchy tunes that were already in style, which then hooked people onto all their other stuff. If not amazing musically, The Beatles did start/popularize a lot of music styles that still go on today.

Ok the funnyjunk community seriously lacks any understanding of why the Beatles deserve your respect. before the beatles turned up the only real rock and roll music was elvis presley and jerry lee louis. and they all played the same 3 chord rock and roll songs (all following the I-IV-V chord progression). when the beatles came out they brought new elements and new combinations of chords to music. they basically revolutionized the way songs were composed and paved the way for bands like the rolling stones and led zeppelin to come up with even more variation. the beatles are the one's who first started improvising past the rock n roll cliche's and broke free and created a new understanding on how rock n roll music can be composed. if the beatles had not done it, genres like hard and metal wouldn't have come to be.
That is why you should respect the beatles even though you don't like their music.

I don't think they truly revolutionized rock and roll music. While they were busy singing love songs, Led Zeppelin, CCR, and AC/DC were rocking the **** out.
#283 to #279 - riseandfightfj (07/20/2013) [-]
you missed my point if beatles hadnt changed music, from the 3 chord progression there would have never been a led zeppelin or anything else to rock out to. the brought the initial change, that is the most important. led zep, and the rest of them just took from there.
