For now. I wouldn't give the chance, though.

Yep, this real nasty fungus is basically the inspiration for the one in the Last of Us.

Don't worry, the human nervous system is far more complex than those of small arthropods. It's extremely unlikely that a fungus will ever evolve to the point where it can control a human body.

That said, I know a surgeon who says that an internal fungal infection is nearly a death sentence. The only drugs strong enough to remove it have an equal chance of just killing the patient outright.

Unlikely... but possible?

Im going to name my first born son after you, Shmooglavoue

...Is that French?
#102 to #68 - Shmooglavoue (07/19/2013) [-]
I don't believe so. It's the product of me painstakingly searching for an internet name that I would not have to add numbers to. But for what it's worth, my French professor is the only one to pronounce it right when she saw it written.

Im pretty sure the Cordyceps fungi shown here IS the one fungus in the last of us.
User avatar #63 to #32 - harbingerwolf (07/19/2013) [-]
Cordyceps is a genus with a few different species infecting different invertebrates. I know the infection in Last of us is a Cordyceps but not sure if its an actual real life species or a made up one. I think it might have been an existing one albiet mutated.
User avatar #262 to #63 - mehmachine (07/20/2013) [-]
I understand what you mean, I guess I should have been more specific. It's based off of the variant that takes over an ants nervous system but has mutated to an extent that it can do the same with humans.
#14 to #8 - teenytinyspider (07/19/2013) [-]
It depends on the fungus you get I believe. There are some people who have gotten a certain type that could be deadly, but they were fine but have to be watched for the rest of their lives. It really depends on the type.
User avatar #116 to #8 - kirkbot (07/19/2013) [-]
extremely unlikely...
so it's not impossible
we're ******
#259 to #116 - Shmooglavoue (07/20/2013) [-]
Not possible as far as we know. I just can't say it's a certainty because you occasionally get strange evolutionary developments that nobody predicted. Like a species of bacteria that lives in the giant trash pile out in the pacific evolving to break down plastics that no other organism can, and would otherwise be there for thousands of years.

But fungus takes much, MUCH longer to evolve than bacteria. Bacteria generations can begin and end in minutes.

That's like those spore ants....

A spore falls on an ant, takes over the ants mind, makes it climb a tree, starts growing roots of out the ants head and then uses the ant as a base for making more spores.

Plant spores own Ant
