Going in a zig zag pattern doesn't make the trip easier, it makes it longer therefore makes it require more energy.

HOWEVER-- Under certain circumstances going in a zig zag pattern is the only way to get up an incline, it's why certain mountain paths always zig zag. With stairs it's a totally ******* moot point cause stairs can't be TOO steep, they're ******* stairs, if they're flat you won't slide down them. But going straight up a steep mountain side is damn near impossible, so the path zigzags making the incline lesser.

I do competitive cyclecross racing (It's mountain biking except there's a section you have to carry the ******* bike) -- and trust me the paths going straight up the hill are way ******* harder than ones going diagonally.

I assume you're talking about the system of making zigzag roads to get up mountains. If you apply the same science, using stairs instead, then voilà, you easen your trip by walking up stairs diagonally.

putting your foot up vertical is harder than at an angle, the same applies with mountains, as with stairs, both deteriorate the angle at which you walk up the slope

the incline of the stairs does not under any circumstances decline as you change your angle and if you think it does you're very bad at visualizing it. Stairs have no essential incline because gravity doesn't have the same pulling effect on someone walking up stairs as it does someone walking up a slope. Your feet can't slip down the stairs from them being too steep-- all of this is of course assuming that the stairs are horizontal to the center of the earth. Imagine walking up a 70 degree hill in roller blades, now imagine walking up stairs with a 70 degree incline in roller blades.

I really hate to break it to you but I'm not wrong.... I mean, technically walking up stairs at an angle reduces the height you achieve for the horizontal movement you put in... so the theoretical incline of your movement is lesser. Buttttttttt-- you still have to make it to the top of the stairs, you still take just as many steps. If your steps are at an angle you just increase the length of each of those steps.

I subscribed to her a while back, and for some reason I've just grown to despise her. As soon as a new video starts "Why do you have to say hi like that every time?! It's weird! You said it weird! If your hi were to be typed, it would be in italics! **** you!". I think it's because she's one of those popular Asian youtubers that just suddenly stopped, like Nigahiga and KevJumba. Feel like a child whose dad went out for a "pack o' smokes" and didn't come back until I was grown up, except less that. Sure, they all return and make a few videos, but not as much as they used to and not to the same standard... Also, what the hell happened to Julian Smith for that matter? He hasn't released anything for ages and the thing he released recently was a proper song. I was waiting for the funnies the entire time. It wasn't that bad, but it seemed kind of odd to post his new band's video there. His subscribers are there for the funnies... Why am I typing so much down here. Went off on quite a tangent...

False. By going on a more linear plane, the theory is that you will use less energy going up a hill in a zig-zag pattern. Obviously this would take longer to climb a hill. This method depends on one's stamina.

However, this bitch is dumb and doesn't realize the fact that she is going up a set of stairs. So no matter which way she approaches the stairs, she is going to be using the same amount of energy for every step.

PE = MGH, she will never use less energy by zig zagging, all she is doing is using energy by covering more distance.

Perhaps not on those stairs, but zig-zagging on a steep hill definitely requires less effort to climb than going in a straight line.

the formula is there, you cannot reach the same height but expend less energy.

would you use more energy climbing up a seven foot wall or walking up 8 one foot steps? i agree that more work must be done in one case, but the time integral of the of power (energy/time) your body generates is not necessarily the same as the total amount of energy needed. in other words certain methods may cause you to use more total energy to complete the same amount of work not because they add distance, but because they cause your body to waste energy in other ways.

i don't agree/disagree with the original comment but your refutation was incorrect.

I don't want to go into it too much because things get complicated very quickly, but the formula to consider mostly is this one:
