I find the handstand much much more impressive than the press
User avatar #68 to #62 - fezzo (07/18/2013) [-]
If you look closely in the mirror behind them I believe you can see him holding a ceiling beam with his feet. So he's not really doing a hand stand.
User avatar #107 to #68 - bigmanfifty (07/18/2013) [-]
ah hell, being able to swing your legs up and catch a ceiling beam while balancing on a thin metal pole is better than I can do.

._. I'm 135 lbs, if I tried that when the weights went back down it would yank me with it and I'd face plant the guide bar.

Isn't it weird how we find certain things more respectable than others? "I CAN MOVE THIS BIG THING!" no it's okay we have a fork lift "FUUUUUCK YOUUUUU" this really isn't necessary jim
#18 to #13 - anon (07/18/2013) [-]
we value things like athletic ability because we have instincts in our brains from back when skills like "moving heavy things", running fast, and good aim were necessary for survival. women have instinctual desire to mate with men like this because back in caveman days those were the men who would ensure not only their personal survival but would procreate healthy and capable offspring who would, in turn, survive. so no, its not that weird.
User avatar #24 to #18 - demandsgayversion (07/18/2013) [-]
We got boners from all that because it was necessary for our survival. Why haven't we adapted yet to things that are more important to our lives now?
#26 to #24 - anon (07/18/2013) [-]
because evolution takes millions of years, our brains are wired for the way life was lived since before apes could stand on two legs. the human lifestyle has only existed for a couple thousand years, it takes longer than that to completely reprogram instinctual tendencies.
User avatar #27 to #26 - demandsgayversion (07/18/2013) [-]
Physical evolution takes millions of years, but cultural revolution takes only a little while. We've gained the rights for black people - pretty much all basic human rights, lady rights, and now gay marriage in only a lifetime or two, so when are we gonna reevaluate our priorities?
User avatar #45 to #27 - articulate (07/18/2013) [-]
So rather than working out we should just be attracted to fat people? I like it how it is.
User avatar #56 to #45 - demandsgayversion (07/18/2013) [-]
No, but we need to cut back on the macho caveman acting. That ****** annoying. Really all forms of ignorance that stems from the caveman's *reason for distrusting people who are different* At least the cavemen embraced new ideas, we're still holding on to some really old ones.
User avatar #65 to #56 - Foxchase (07/18/2013) [-]
I don't see what's bad about having athletic bodies as an ideal. It's better to have athletic ideals than the anorectic models you see everywhere (because there are different kinds of athletic bodies, don't have to be ripped to be athletic.)
I see what you mean about the "macho acting", though. The "brahs" and all that **** , but those people make the others who just want to work out to feel better about themselves look bad. It's a real pain in the ass to be at the gym when they are around, chugging their protein shakes, blasting music and moaning out when lifting something, just to prove to everyone "me so stronk". They also hog all the equipment, and they give you judging stares if you can't lift as much as them.

Im willing to bet that 75% of the people saying 225 isnt much would snap in half trying to bench it.
#97 to #89 - deddead (07/18/2013) [-]
I'll give you it's a decent chunk of weight
My one rep max is 265 for bench so I can do 225 a time or two
#101 to #89 - anon (07/18/2013) [-]
Yeah. My peak before injury (was lifting way too often) was about 200. That was after about 6 months of lifting that I got there. Tendinitis in your shoulder takes a ******* long time to heal so I lost some gains and I'm just lifting 135 with high reps because I don't want to over do it again. Eventually I'll move back to the heavy stuff.
#120 to #101 - poopygoldfart (07/18/2013) [-]
I know that feel bro ... always thought more weight brings more results ... til I broke my shoulder ... had to stop for a while... everyone is so focused on weight that they forget to watch the form ... I focus way more on form now and not weight ... pic related it's me

for 225 yelling like that is embarrassing. 275 min for hard grunts. 315 for curses. 405+ for the summoning chant of the dark lord dagoth.

The average man can't bench 1 plate, stop trying to sound so hardcore.
#69 to #59 - ruckanucka (07/18/2013) [-]
Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis? At my gym the heaviest plates are 45lbs, But i'm Canadian, eh? So I dunno, but what man can't bench 90lbs plus bar?
User avatar #75 to #69 - TheHutchie (07/18/2013) [-]
I frequently lift heavy bags at work, but in the UK we measure in kilos and not pounds so I'm totally lost.
User avatar #76 to #75 - TheHutchie (07/18/2013) [-]
I found the weight converter on my phone. The bags I lift range from 33 to 66 pounds and I can lift two at once if the bastards are nice enough to include handles, so yeah I'm alright.
#80 to #69 - itsbendingtime (07/18/2013) [-]
We use 20kg plates in the UK (45lbs), and a standard olympic bar is also 20kg.
A 1 plate bench is therefore 60kg, and the average man can press something like 45kg.
I agree thats weak as **** and dragged down by the huge amount of people who never go to the gym, but it's still the average.
Looking around my gym I'd say the average bench press for a regular gym goer is 1.5-2 plate.
User avatar #74 to #69 - nooc (07/18/2013) [-]
For people with little to no gym experience that don't really do any manual labour, this is hard. But it is easily achievable within like 1-2 months if you frequent the gym enough.

Am I the only one here, who doesn't have "chest day"? I have squat day and deadlift day, with 3 sets of 5 of heavy benchpresses after finishing the main training. While I respect the awesome amount of strength benchpresses put in your hands and upper body, having a big, putforward chest is somehow undesirable and unesthetical. In my opinion, heavy bench presses combined with dips and hard shoulder work (e.g. with heavy kettlebells and bodyweight) on other days are enough for front upper body.

Even though it may not be pleasing to you it is still unhealthy to ignore areas of your body, especially something as large as your chest bro. You should switch to a 3 day slit so you can hit a wider variety of muscles bro.
