During one of the World Wars, i don't recall which, a german ambassador or something forgot some notes somewhere that were intended for mexico asking them to declare war on the US. I'm a little rusty about this, but thats the short, less detailed version of what happened.

It was during the Great War (World War). In 1917, the Foreign Secretary for the German Empire, Arthur Zimermann sent a telegram to Heinrich Von Eckardt, the German Ambassador in Mexico. Saying that if Mexico declares war on the U.S, Germany will help them win back New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. I know a lot more but I don't want to bore you with my picky details, but I hope this helps

Please do go on, I love that extra history lesson that they usually forget in school, you know some of the mainly unknown facts and such.
You can also pm me them, that'd be even better. But upto you pal.

The british intercepted the telegram and gave it to the Americans. The Mexican's didn't want in on it anyway, especially after the Americans already knew about it.

when the mexicans got it, they basically gave a note back saying "are you serious? we might not be the smartest nation but we are as sure as hell not stupid enough to invade the americans, you aren't across the border, so you don't see how strong and patriotic they are." Mexico basically said America is a strong opponent, and why they rejected the telegram offer, and sorry for any spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes, this is all from memory >_<

ooooooh. Know any other interesting facts about world war 1 or 2? Mostly the widely unknown facts .
For example the fact that the peace between germany and france was signed in a train wagon in France. And after Hitler had occupied France during the world war 2, Hitler made the french sign the surrender treaty(or what ever it was) in the exact same train wagon on German soil.
Something similiarish, aye?

Thanks in advance!

This is a fact about WW1 but i have no idea how well known this is so don't blame me if you already knew.

when christmas came during the trenchwars, both sides decided not to attack eachother and they began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs. at some places, the tension was even so low that both parties would venture into no-man's land to exchange all kinds of food and souvenirs.

Yeah, Knew that one, they also played football together. The british and the germans. But the authorities on both sides were furious about the incident and banned further similiar actions. About a year later germans wanted peace again, came out of their trenches with a white flag, but the british shot them on sight.

You're right. America found this telegram and we basically used it as our excuse to enter that wart.

I thought the sinking of the Lusitania was what provoked America into WWI.
Although, I'm sure it was a multitude of things, and not one event.

You're right, this is my favorite part, the British had the zimmerman telegram for a while, but the germans were doing unrestricted submarine warfare, and the british had the blockade which pissed off americans because they were all for the open sea trade. but the british were waiting for another sinking like the lusitania, and then the germans sunk another ship, Edward Bell (the British Ambassador) went into the white house to the pissed off woodrow wilson and dropped off the note, which angered wilson more to the point where he wanted to declare war (Because Wilson won presidency again because of his neutrality in European conflicts) andddd that's about it

getting bombed in Pearl Harbor might have had a little bit more to do with the US entering the war
User avatar #37 to #32 - Ruspanic (07/16/2013) [-]
Pearl Harbor was WWII, the Zimmermann Letter was WWI.
