He'd have every right to do so. If a monkey sprayed me in the face with pepper spray, I would go on a lynching spree with a couple buddies from the Klan. "Self defense officer. Those apes were throwing feces at me and screaming something about Black Jesus. I had no choice but to fire my AK47 into the angry crowd of ******* " Worst case scenario is getting assault and battery charges from the familes of the several dozen gorrilas you hung from that tree in your backyard. Gotta mark your territory, right?

In west central florida, born and raised
In the suburbs is where I spend most of my days
Chillin' out maxin', realaxin' all cool and all
Eatin' some skittles outside of the pool

When a big fatass spic said I was up to no good
Said I was makin' trouble in the neighborhood
I threw one little punch and the spic got scared and said
"You're just a ****** if I shoot you no one will care"

I, pulled, back to take a swing at the wetback's face
And I yelled to the beaner "good night! See you later"
I looked at his hand and I was suddenly scared
And now I'm layin' on the ground and trying to suck air

I honestly hate how every single person turns this **** about race, when it's not. Zimmerman murdered Trayvon, and theres not any solid evidence supporting OR against the Zim Zam's description of the events. I think both Trayvon and Zimmerman were in the wrong- Zimmerman should have left him alone, and Trayvon should not have reportedly confronted him. While I agree legally Zimmerman, having been assaulted first, has the right to fire, it should not have been with intent to kill, and he shouldnt have gone against the order of an officer and stalked a kid.
TL;DR- they're both dumbasses, end of story, dont paint either as the 'hero' or 'good guy' because its ******** .

If your going to shot someone its better to shoot to kill or don't shoot, a dead person can't testify and can't sue you after words. Gun safety 101 don't point it unless you fully intend on killing it.

Exactly, Zimmerman could have no called up the police and simply asked Trayvon what he was doing and avoided the whole situation, but he called the cops, was told to stay put, and got a little antsy and got an itchy trigger finger. And Trayvon should not have provoked a dude with a gun, seriously that's a dumb ass move.

Everyone thinks I'm a complete, racist asshole just for weighing out the different arguments, different scenarios I'd read so far and feeling that it tends more towards Zimmerman's favour. Does anyone have any sound, coherent or rational argument that defends Trayvon?
I've lost a black Facebook friend as a result of it, eventhough I took no sides at the time

No one does. Hell, there are black dudes that were rooting for Zimmerman. They make a big deal because Zimmerman was "white" (hispanic), most violence on blacks is black on black. I guess it's only bad if a guy who isn't black does it.

i feel that the entire encounter was unnecessary. Zimmerman alerted the police and was heard using angry language refering to Martin as one of "those asseholes who always get away" he pursued him unnecessarily without identifying himself, which likely caused martin to fear for his life. Apparently martin got away and Zimmerman got off the phone with the police.

We do not know what happened next, just what Zimmerman claims, since martin obviously couldn't give his side of the story.

But a heavier older armed man somehow gets in a fist fight with the man he has profiled and harassed without cause or provocation to do so, he begins to lose the fight and shoots the kid dead. I see no reason why it should be legal to bring deadly force to a fistfight, especially not when you instigated the incident by stalking a highschool student through the neighborhood.

When asked whether i think it is more likely that martin looped around and just attacked the guy who had been following him, or whether the angry Zimmerman who has already judged the suspect a criminal continued following and confronted him. It seems far more likely it was Zimmerman.

All in all the whole situation was Zimmermans fault, and if he had just sad at home watching tv no houses would have been robbed and Martin would have made it home safely. I am not claiming he did anything illegal, I am claiming it shouldn't be legal to kill someone in a fist fight you instigated. At the very least manslaughter charges seemed appropriate.
User avatar #138 to #111 - weenieandthebutt (07/15/2013) [-]
What he did, he was within the law to do so but then all the ethical and moral questions begin to kick in, "should he have done this?". "Did he have any rights to do what he did" etc. I'll admit what he did was quite stupid and overzealous but maybe he had good intentions for it, I'm not sure. I dunno how the fist fight started but if it was Martin's who started it, then Zimmerman had every right to use whatever brute means of self defence.

I'm sick and tired of people acting as if you can plan out your defence strategy effectively in battle. It ain't like the ******* movies! You just act on your instincts that's triggered by the fight or flight response and use whatever means possible to defend himself. People act as if Martin's was a little kid but he was ******* 6 foot and with the typical lean black people build, they're usually ******* strong. Provided that Martin's attacked first, maybe he attacked because he simply felt threatened (can't say for certain) but then again, he has a bit of a thuggish persona.

Everyone acts as if he's this innocent angel and that he doesn't deserve to die at 17 etc. Not saying he necessarily deserves to die but even at 17, you're still accountable for your own actions. I don't even know how it's a racial issue, it's not because of his physical skin colour, it's just the fact that he looked like a suspicious teenager in a hoodie. I would still be quite suspicious whether he was white, black or Asian.
User avatar #128 to #111 - SgtObvious (07/15/2013) [-]
It's A LOT more likely that Trayvon started the fight considering how he was a known fighter and was taller and significantly more athletic than Zimmerman. Trayvon escalated the situation by attacking him so you can't blame Zimmerman for taking action when he felt his life was in danger.
User avatar #131 to #128 - sanguinesolitude (07/15/2013) [-]
like i said i think it was legal. But i dont think the law should allow you to kill someone in a fist fight with no consequences.

I dont even care one way or another, it just seems wrong to be able to get away with killing an unarmed man walking around the neighborhood. If martin feared for his life he had the right to stand his ground and defend himself.

the moral of this story is that if you want to kill someone, just stalk them until they get angry and punch you, then shoot them in the chest.
User avatar #137 to #131 - SgtObvious (07/15/2013) [-]
If Trayvon feared for his life he had the right to run away and call the police. Under no circumstances does he have the legal right to committ assault against someone because he thinks they're creepy. And if he punched him and ran away, Zimmerman wouldn't have done anything besides call the cops again. But Trayvon didn't. He began violently beating Zimmerman up and bashing his head into the curb. At that point I think Zimmerman has no choice but to take some sort of action. Trayvon brought his death upon himself by attacking someone because he thought he was sketchy instead of doing the right thing and running away.
User avatar #146 to #137 - sanguinesolitude (07/15/2013) [-]
Everything we know about the incident is what Zimmerman said. If he went up to Marting and trying to accost him and got beat up, obviously he wouldnt say thats what happened. If someone runs at you at night and you shoot them, you have the right under stand your grown to do that if you fear for your life. You are suggesting you can shoot someone but not punch them? does that seem right?

Zimmerman has a choice, just fight and get beat up instead of killing someone. Why is your momentary pain worth their life. Zimmerman certainly didnt look like a man who almost died and he didnt even suffer a concussion or any serious injuries.
User avatar #156 to #146 - SgtObvious (07/15/2013) [-]
Ok, theoretically, if Zimmerman ran at Trayvon, he should have just done what he needed to do, gotten him down, and ran away. If that's what happened, his continued attack is assault and is illegal. However, I'm 99% sure that a fat, unathletic, middle-aged man wouldn't menacingly run at / attack a very fit and noticeably taller black guy. Evidence and common sense points to Trayvon getting pissed because someone was following him and attacking him. And Zimmerman would have no have of knowing whether this athletic and taller black guy on top of him beating the **** out of him would stop before he seriously hurt or killed him. And if someone runs at you in the middle of the night, no you don't have the right to shoot them. You have the right to shoot someone if they have physically assaulted you and you believe that they will hurt you further. Someone running "at you" in the middle of the night might be running past you or trying to catch up to you to tell you something.
User avatar #167 to #156 - sanguinesolitude (07/15/2013) [-]
it just seems a strange law. You are implying that if Martin knocked him down, then he didnt have the right to keep hitting him, but Zimmerman DID have the right to kill him. Just seems silly.

the whole story is just sad and pathetic. Neither did the right thing and one kid is dead and Zimmerman will never have a normal life. I guess luckily for him the NRA will jerk him off on stage and pay to have him talk about how he almost died "protecting the neighborhood" from an innocent teenager.
User avatar #618 to #167 - SgtObvious (07/16/2013) [-]
You're not understanding me. If Trayvon knocks Zimmerman on the ground and stops, he doesn't have the right to keep hitting him and Zimmerman doesn't have the right to shoot him. If Trayvon does keep attacking, Zimmerman has the right to defend himself. Neither did the right thing, but Trayvon was more wrong.
