I understood this the time I saw it. One of the cool things about being a Latin/Ancient Greek student.

I didn't notice this until I was watching it with my roommate's son with the closed captioning on. I never realized how many jokes I missed just because I wasn't paying attention.

It took my family and I years to realize this joke. A bunch of grown ass people were sitting around and one person was like, "EPIPHANY! HERCULES JOKE." Everybody's face when it sinks in.
#182 - thunderousocelot (07/12/2013) [-]
No the true most underappreciated joke of all time is when Hercules and Meg are walking into the garden and Herc is talking about their date and says "And that play, Oedipus, I thought i had problems" That is adults only humor at its finest.

Recently rewatched Hercules, I was laughing almost the whole time. Loved the roman numerals joke, but the Oedapis one was hilarious!

That movie is full of so many jokes that I didn't quite get when I was a little kid. Hercules and Tangled are my all time two favorite Disney movies.

User avatar #170 to #163 - kerfufflemachtwo (07/12/2013) [-]
In all fairness...Hercules was his Roman name.

His original Greek name was Heracles.

I know its been like 12 years, but they do reference Hades and Zeus and use the greek names for all the other gods right? Then again cultural reference never make any sense in Disney movies. Case in point, Aladdin.
User avatar #174 to #173 - kerfufflemachtwo (07/12/2013) [-]
Yeah, they use the Greek names for everybody except the main character.

I don't find this funny. It's not the fact that it's under appreciated it's just not that great of a joke.
Incoming -500 thumbs.

MFWhenever I encounter this hideously inaccurate musical monstrosity
User avatar #149 to #144 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
this is one of the worse disney movies
if you actually look at the plot and ****
but the cool characters and mythology make up for it
kind of like how transformers sucks as a movie but is very enjoyable to watch
User avatar #151 to #149 - icametocomment ONLINE (07/12/2013) [-]
The characters are decent, yes, but being the mythfag that I am I can't get over the inaccuracies and dumbing-down. The story of Hercules (Or Heracles, rather) isn't even family-friendly in the first place. Then again, most Greek myths weren't.
User avatar #171 to #151 - fireprincess (07/12/2013) [-]
But that's most Disney movies that follow someone else's story. I mean look at the little mermaids or repunzal. They're kids movies. Of course there dumbed down.
#209 to #171 - icametocomment ONLINE (07/12/2013) [-]
Excellent examples. I knew that The Little Mermaid was a book by the time I was in middle school, but I had never read it. I skimmed it online one day. MFW

Same here. Someone told me that that wasn't how the real story ended. When I finally read it I was pretty bummed. It was a good story just not something I would read to a little kid. That's why I like Disney.they teach kids dreams come true. Then when the kids older they find the real versions and learn everybody lies.

I'll admit that I love that movie too AND that I'm a huge-ass hypocrite for saying so. Although again, so many historical inaccuracies means I love it for the characters and hate it for the story-butchering.

Rasputin WAS rumored to be pretty out there, though. You heard about he died, right?

As a hemophiliac the part in "Once Upon a December" when Alexei Romanov comes out and limps to the dance floor makes me all feely inside.
