I am sorry but that is actually an Australian toddler. You can tell by the look in his eyes that he is reaching for the beer to get alittle 'liquid courage' and to use the shattered pieces of glass as weapons to fight off the dingoes currently encircling him but are thusfar, out of frame.

I was told by the Immigration officer that validated my visa in the US that, as a German citizen, I could purchase alcohol in the US at 16 with an ID
I tired it, and almost got ******* arrested because the casher freaked the **** out

I know that isn't true. My buddies were study abroad students from the UK and couldn't buy alcohol all year even though they had been buying it for 2 years back home.

16 to buy it in a bar
18 to buy it from a store
#298 to #78 - anon (07/10/2013) [-]
actually its eighteen to buy from a bar in Scotland, I should know i was there march break and i'm 16
User avatar #587 to #298 - odonnell (07/10/2013) [-]
No. Its 16 to buy from a bar, with a meal. In England you need an adult to buy you it and you're limited to an amount of units. There is no limits on how much alcohol you can buy in the bar (Unless you're completely wrecked, then they can refuse you) as long as you've had a meal at some point during your visit, and you can buy it yourself.

If someone refused to sell you it even with your meal, then remind them that its Scotland and they have been licensed by the Scottish Government and abide by Scottish laws.

same in Texas, you can drink as long as your parents are with you and arnt sharing with your friends
#92 to #82 - aznow (07/10/2013) [-]
Well, that isn't the same. You don't need your parents around in Denmark if you want to drink. You can legally drink alcohol at age 0 and also smoke - though your parents have the right to tell you what to do because they have a certain amount of responsibility. When you reach age 16 you can buy lighter alcohol with percents up to ca. 17%. When you reach age 18 you can buy whatever you want to. It is also allowed for your parents to buy and serve alcohol and cigarettes to you and your friends.

well its not like kids in Texas wont drink. Texas has alot of small towns and it gets boring as **** so they go to parties and drink. ive been to parties and i've seen high school juniors drinking like there's no tomorrow
#100 to #94 - aznow (07/10/2013) [-]
I actually didn't know that there was states in the US where you could drink at a age younger than 21. How old are high school juniors? And if you need to drink like there's no tomorrow you have to acquire some decent beer and construct a beer-bong. Making it yourself makes it so much more awesome!

Denmark
16 to buy anything below 16.5%
18 to buy anything above 16.5%
18 to buy alcohol in a bar
No actual lower drinking age, as long as somebody who is old enough buys your booze for you, you could be drinking before you have your umbilical cord cut...
But the authorities seem to frown upon giving a bunch of kindergardeners a bottle of vodka and tell them to go nuts.
User avatar #372 to #73 - metalmind (07/10/2013) [-]
In Germany it's similar, but you can buy Beer, Wine, etc. in a bar if you are 16.

User avatar #456 to #73 - JENNAY (07/10/2013) [-]
I can dig this. It allows the parents to introduce it as a non-taboo subject and gradually allows people to make good or bad decisions for themselves once it's no longer some secret coveted object
User avatar #476 to #456 - lordlolland (07/10/2013) [-]
I don't remember my first sip of beer, but it was with my mother and it happened years before I was allowed to buy alcohol. So when time came and I could legally buy beer it was nothing new and I didn't rush out to drink myself senseless.

A friend of mine had an older brother who bought him beer when he asked for it, he was drinking every weekend by age 13 and his parents didn't care. When he was allowed to buy beer he went into full blown alcoholism, it got so bad that he had to go to rehab when he was 17.

Our alcohol laws are great, assuming the parents know what they are doing.
But it becomes a problem when parents don't give a **** if their kids are developing alcoholism before high school.
User avatar #567 to #476 - JENNAY (07/10/2013) [-]
Exactly. My mom for ex is very ok with me drinking since I have proven myself to her to be a responsible adult, even though I am not of drinking age. At the same time, she is aware that I am in college and this stuff flows like water so she's always just giving the gentle reminders without being a pushover about anything. I figure if your kids can gain your trust as an adult, then it's ok to treat them as one
#404 - Jameshaich (07/10/2013) [-]
Does it matter?
In Scotland, it's 18 to smoke and drink, but most of the kids here do it at 12.

Truth be told, drinking at 16 is good and driving at a later age helps. Germans will be able to know their limit while teens who are driving at 16 reach 21, they'll drink and not be able to know their limit, thus creating a accident usually.

For what it's worth, I always thought beer was absolutely disgusting. Little did I know that I had only been drinking American beer like Bud Light and Busch. Absolutely disgusting. I couldn't drink it. Then a friend told me about some other types of beers and I had this dunkelweisen. It is, by far, the best beer I've ever had. So delicious. German/foreign beer is much better than American beer water.
