As far as I know, most UFOs are purportedly seen quite far out in the distance. You'll have to zoom in quite a lot to get a decent look at it. Even with an HD video recorder, the zoom will blur it up enough after a point. So unless the unknown object is right in your backyard, you're stuck either pointing out a speck in the distance or shooting a big blurry slop.

(incoming long rant)
I disagree with every sighting simply because none make sense.
Every footage of an "alien" or "alien vessel" seen is just ridiculous ******** with no reason.
First of all, why would aliens fly into orbit of an obviously sentient planet and just hover around like a bunch of assholes, not doing a damn thing or even attempting contact. Their patterns and movements and placements don't even show signs of any possible study either.
Second, why would they travel such obviously long distances just to do absolutely nothing? If our understanding of science is correct, even moving at light speed or faster would take a long period of time to go from place to place.
Third, why would every alien sighting follow our typical movie ******** since the 50's of frail and usually thin bodies with bulgy eyes? Why are they naked? Sure they might not care for clothing for the sake of dignity, but what about armor? Pressurized suits to protect them from an environment they shouldn't be used to? Why do they seem to wander around like a scared animal unable to think with simple logic.

Even if they don't think exactly like us, these are ideas of basic logic that should be universal for sentient beings.
Don't think I don't think aliens aren't out there, I truly believe there is other life out there in the galaxy. There just has to be.

But all of this just irks me so much.. Thanks for reading if you did.

Now, I'll respect your opinion, as I hope you do mine, but here are my arguments.
First, we can't really be sure why we're sighting UFOs near us in the first place, but we can make a few educated conclusions. If their thought processes were anything like us, they would have scientists, geologists, sociologists, miners etc. or in other words, they have guys who specialize and have interests. We can't tell how many other species there are, but, a developing intelligent race on a planet that's filled to the brim with rare heavy elements, we would at least be of some interest.

Second, if they are advanced enough for interstellar travel, they're probably thousands to millions of years ahead of us. Hypothetical technologies we come up with could be second-hand knowledge to their kind. They know a thousand times about physics than we do, so we don't have much of a say on what they can or can't do. We even already have found theoretical technologies that could provide faster-than-light travel, such as an Alcubiere Drive, but the completion of said technology is estimated to be in the next century.

Third, Apparently in the Roswell reports (if you believe that or not) they were wearing pressurized suits. Most common imagery of aliens really come from the sci-fi craze when UFOs were the thing back then. We really couldn't know what they looked like, so people kind of taken the reigns. There isn't many descriptions of aliens from people who claim they were abducted, but the big-eyed, grey, naked aliens that those have in common were said to be silent and have a very stiff and robotic movement to them. They might be mechanical drones or androids, which wouldn't be a surprising concept for such an advanced race.

And while I also will admit, every sighting HAS to be taken with a grain of salt at first, there are some unexplainable phenomena that most common debunking has failed to eliminate. There have been Military reports and sightings, UFOs taken from multiple cameras at multiple angles, heck, even paintings from the 16th century of several sightings, including a supposed war over Europe, described by witnesses in Hamburg, Germany back then as "Giant vessels spewing colored lights at each other," with "smaller flying crosses also doing the same." When one of these crosses got hit by a colored light, they said it "burst into flame, fell, and created an explosion and a puff of smoke when it landed." And after the battle died down, there were several more demonstrations around the area, over Sweden, Denmark, and a few other countries... There were news prints posted about this all over the region, so as strange as it sounds, it doesn't seem made up.

All I'm saying is that you have to be very careful, don't believe EVERYTHING you see, but denying everything without further study can also be a wrong move.

Great argument and very true. Pretty much every piece of footage out there that claims to be "alien footage" is a HOAX. I don't think aliens have ever visited Earth. I'm not sure they ever will. And furthermore if they DO exist (which I also agree there has to be life in the universe somewhere else...) I don't think we should be reaching out to them quiet yet. I admit I watch alot of UFO videos because they intrigue me and I have a wild imagination. But in reality, alot of it is fake.

I'm not sure anyone's ever heard of the Kecksburg UFO incident. In the 60's, a UFO crashed in Keksburg, PA. My last college was about 40 minute drive from there. On my last day there I drove down to Kecksburg just to do my own little digging. There is a spot where the UFO crashed, a mock up of the ship from "Unsolved Mysteries", and a local firehall has several newspaper articles on the event. In all of history I think it's one of the more intriguing alien tales. So close to where I live I couldn't help but check it out. No one including NASA ever gave a legitimate excuse for what it was. But was it REALLY an "alien"? I have my doubts.

I am a huge, loyal follower of Stephen Hawking. I think his insight on Aliens is the best:
- Our chances of finding aliens via radio waves is slim to none
- LIfe probably does exist but it would have to be extraordinary circumstances (and evolution) for an intelligent race like humans to even exist anywhere in the universe
- If intergalactic-traveling aliens do exist, we shouldn't reach out to them because we only have to look at ourselves to see how hostile a species can be... also if they possess that kind of technology to travel space they probably have radical harvesting technology to destroy Earth in a matter of minutes

Sorry for the wall of text, just like discussing space travel and the universe. Imagine if this world can put aside differences and travel to other worlds...

Numbers according to your "first", "second", etc.
1) If any of these UFO sightings are true, you still can't judge exactly what they're doing. For a species that has mastered interstellar travel, who knows what their technology will look like to us. Their Mars rover could be a radiant bloat of exotic elementary particles, and to us it would look like a blob of flying lights.
2) Well if we're going "scientifically speaking", physics tells us at-light and faster-than-light speeds are impossible for any object that has mass. So unless the aliens are photons, it would take even longer for them to travel. There are, however, non-conventional means of superluminal travel, e.g. wormholes or gravitational sheers, though these are highly hypothetical.
#46 to #44 - anon (07/10/2013) [-]
3) Sightings of actual aliens I find even less credible. However, the "scared animal" semblance is plausible. If you survive a plane crash in a jungle without food or resources, you'd be pretty scared. The plane itself is a technology inconceivably complex for the most intelligent non-human primates in the region. Regardless, you, the strange being, are pretty weak physically. It is the technology that you rely on to make up for your evolutionary shortcomings, and when you lack it in an unfamiliar place, you only think about survival.
User avatar #64 to #46 - dumbasshunter ONLINE (07/10/2013) [-]
3.5) alot of sightings of aliens are actually reportedas to them wearing some form of clothing, or armor. in addition, alot of the sightings mention how tall the beings are, or how much they look like humans. one sighting was simply a story of a farmer finding a man next to a stream, collecting water with a tube connected to a hovering disc, they conversed about what he was doing, before the "alien" climbed some steps and flew away. another is simply an abduction where the man was told to remain calm whilst they took samples of his semen....

im not saying what you're saying is incorrect, but that there have been sightings of more then just crypto

"Aliens" exist, no doubt about it, whether or not they have anything to do with us is the question.

We haven't even reached space stage yet, and as such might still be considered animals, maybe Earth is some sort of pet project, hell, maybe most life in the universe was wiped out somehow in a great war.

Most likely we've never had alien contact. Frankly, know knows if interstellar travel is even possible on a practice scale. Then again, the universe is old as **** , maybe even older than we think, much older than our planet and life anyway.

Who can say really? The only depressing thing is that I'm going to die without ever meeting another sentient species not of this world.

Well most ufo sightings that are very close aren't filmed like if a ufo is 300 feet above your head and it appears out of no where, you will most likely not have a camera depending where you are.

If a ufo is a mile above your head, camera's can't zoom in a mile. Plus it is believed ufo's affect electrical equipment below meaning your camera could black out or be **** quality.

Either way, some of the best U.F.O footage came from the 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's and they didn't have high tech camera's compared to now. You might find some decent ufo footage from the 2010 decade but not many people carry around good quality cameras.

The Aurora, Texas UFO case offers some pretty compelling, if inconclusive evidence.

According to the lore, a lone pilot was found in the debris and buried in the local cemetery. When the History channel filmed a special on the incident, most of the locals weren't very ecstatic. Word got out that they were attempting to get permission to excavate the remains, an the stone marking the grave was stolen during the night. Unfortunately, records failed to point out the exact plot where the body supposedly was.
Whether or not it's true, it's still very interesting.
#52 to #48 - anon (07/10/2013) [-]
Well it probably wasn't an alien, from what we know about the distance of space and the speed of light, I'd say it would have been some infinitely more superior beings, both genetically and technology wise, and then for it to crash as the first ******* thing?

Kinda like superman stubbing his toe, waddling around in pain, accidentally tripping and landing on a piece of kryptonite that got showed up his left nipple, very unlikely to happen but if it were to happen, by god it'd be just a bit pathetic.
#54 to #52 - kidsquicker (07/10/2013) [-]
Maybe it was a stupid teenage alien that got drunk and took his parents ship out for a ride. Cruised a few nebula's too far, and pulled over into the Milky Way to ask for directions. Rolled his window down, shouted a few obscenities at a cow to get it's attention, then *BOOM* smashed right into a windmill.
Seen it a million times... poor kids can't handle their liquor. It's a shame, really.

Can someone explain to me (this is of pure interest)

Why do we use "A" when referring to a ufo
but when saying unidentified flying object we use "an"?
User avatar #61 to #60 - doodogger (07/10/2013) [-]
Because when you say UFO. It's pronounced "You Eff Owe". Yes, the letter "Y" is sometimes considered a vowel and sometimes considered a consonant. In this case, it's considered a Consonant when you pronounce "You" in "You Eff Owe" (UFO).

Yes, if you were to say "Unidentified Flying Object" then yes, you'd use "an", not "a", because you know, you use "an" when you're about to say a vowel.

Hope I helped.
