He was one of the maiar, but more specifically he was one of the 5 Istari, the "wizards" chosen to preside over Middle Earth.
(left to right) - (Alatar, Radagast, Saruman, Gandalf, Pallando)

Radagast abandons the problems of men and elves, and becomes a hermit of the woods. Of Alatar and Pallando little is known, they went to the south and probably became corrupt.

Tolkien did not write much about them. They failed in their task of watching over the south and east of Middle Earth and that's all. There are no songs about them.

When i asked this question in the previous post, a commenter said that they helped weakening the armies of mordor in the final battle at minas tirith

That was of course not during the battle itself, but before, so mordors already ginormous army should have been a lot bigger

I don't know much about the War of the Ring. I've only read LotR and the silmarillion about it.
I guess more is said in the apendix books.
What I said about them is from the Unfinished Tales.

Gandalf and Saruman, you know where they were. The blue wizards Tolkien never really went into. Gandalf visited Radagast's home near the beginning of the ring trilogy and it was completely deserted, whereabouts unknown.

it kinda irritates me that tolkien didn't get famous for decades after he wrote the series but he seemed prepared for that, making other books that explained plenty, yet the gaps are large.

Look at it this way, he wrote The Hobbit to read to his children and it took family and friends a long time to get him to publish it and even longer to write the trilogy, thank God for his son Christopher publishing so much else postmortem.

thank hippies too, don't forget they're the ones that brought tolkien out of obscurity
