Actually Shaymalan did watch the show. He said that he loved watching the show with his daughters and that was the reason he wanted to make the movie.

Key words "he said"....his actions as a director do not lead a reasonably prudent person to believe that he really watched the show at all.

His explanation for the changes in the names was that he wanted it to sound more "culurally correct" or something along those lines.
He thought these names would be pronounced like that since they're of "Asian" origin.

He seemed to ignore the fact that the show made up the names, is not on Earth, and is an American cartoon..

Because he's a ******** and ****** director. He thinks he's brilliant and a genius. But he's just bad and an asshole.
You know in an interview he actually blamed the failure of his movie on the AUDIENCES. When asked why they failed so miserably he said "You know.. the people, those critics.. they just don't get me.."
He's an arrogant **** .

Which again, are things that make sense...if you don't know **** about the show and saw a poster or read a brief wiki page and decided to try and make a quick buck on it.

Anyone who watched the show knows it wasn't earth, and that cultures were not comparable to those irl. There was artistic inspirations in the design of characters and their outfits, which is what Shaymalan based EVERYTHING he knows about the series on. Superficial, skin-deep, first-glace interpretations and assumptions made without taking the time to watch and learn about or enjoy the series.
