This post has been on FJ before, don't remember the user that posted it, sorry for not giving you credit.

One of my favorite posts ever.

So, today, I was at a conference
and I saw something I need to share
with you guys, because it rocks:
This woman is a video game designer
and she has an awesome theory
My goal, for the next decade is to make it as
easy to save the world in real lite as it is in online games
At the moment, we spend 3 billion
hours on average playing online games
According to my research, I believe that if we want to
survive the next century on this planet, we need to
increase that number to
Why is that? Well, she believes that us,
gamers, have rel incredible talents.
But more importantly, we have spent
a lot of time developing these talents.
Solar, we' spent
5. 93 million years
The average person today, in a strong
gamer culture, will have spent:
10, 000 hours gaming
by cage fl]
For children in the USA, is the exact
amount of time you will spent in school from tth grade
to highschool graduation if you have perfect attendance.
I guess you see why it is such a big
deal by now. But what do we learn?
Well, this is when the rel talents come
into play (if I might say):
Basically, what she is saying is that
we are very productive when given
epic goals (saving the world by killing
dragons, for example), we always
believe we can do it and we are very
good at forming teams to achieve "
Now, imagine if you could be in real
life as you are in a game such as Wow.
This is what she is trying to create and
I think it needs to be known about.

If I acted in real life how I act in games I'd be on the most wanted list.

It's really easy to be optimistic and productive when I have INFINITE LIVES. Of course I'm going to beat the final boss, everyone will eventually beat whatever game they're trying to play if they try long enough. Even if your skill never improved, the law of large numbers dictates that with enough tries you will win once, eventually.

Imagine if every game you ever purchased only gave you one life. That was it. One try. No tutorial either, just thrown in to the foray and if you died, that's it -- the game would never restart.

That's why her theory is unfortunately ******** . We don't have infinite lives, we only have 1. We can't "sacrifice 5 lives" in order to get the pattern down of the main boss. We have to get it right the first time, every time -- because there is no respawn.

Tell that to Mr. Edison:

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

You don't have to get everything right the first time, you just have to keep trying.

We believe we can do it because the games are generally designed that way
Sure, there are a handful of games out there that are just there to screw you over

Like dark souls

That game...

As a Dark Souls player myself I'm kinda tired of hearing that
The game is a trail and error based game
It won't throw anything at you that you can't handle (with the exception of the Bed of Chaos boss, but they admitted their mistakes in designing him)
Anyway besides that game there's practically no boss that can't be defeated without taking any damage whatsoever

So far, in my life, I've invested well over 25K hours in the Gran Turismo series by itself, since 1999.

Already saw this post an eternity ago, but still I dont know: What the **** is her actual idea?!

Could someone explain
User avatar #27 - vondraco (07/06/2013) [-]
That's a great theory.. But in all the hours I've poured into Dark Souls I've never believed for one second that I "can do it" whenever entering a new area.

I agree it's a good idea and it'd be great if it was true but I think video games are enjoyable because it's considerably easier than real life. I believe they discourage growth in those "talents".
