Actually this is quite possible, as the coat color in Labrador Retrievers is controlled by two separate loci- B and E. The "E" locus controls dilution and causes yellow labs to have their coat color.

"B" represents the dominant trait, and whenever it is present (with the exception of dilution in yellow labs) the dog is a black lab. "b" represents the recessive trait, and whenever the genotype is "b b" (with the exception of dilution in yellow labs), the dog is a chocolate lab.

Black Labs' genes would look like this: B _ E _
Chocolate Labs' genes would look like this: b b E _
Yellow Labs' genes would look like this: _ _ e e

So, in the case of the picture the mother would have had the genes _ _ e e.
The father could have been either a black lab or a chocolate lab, but if he was a chocolate lab the mother's genes must have been B _ e e.

I actually took a class last semester that focused completely on genetics, and this was the only part we studied for a third of the class.

(There is also a second type of yellow lab, which is unregister-able and called "Dudleys". Their genotypes are bbee, and they have either pale or chocolate pigment or an absence of skin pigment. But the above female is obviously not a Dudley.)

tl;dr Yellow bitches can have black pups, even when bred to a chocolate dog, and this is because of genetics.

if that's true, then college-level genetics must be a sad class. I'm in the 8th grade in TN, and they taught us this last year in science class.

This was a portion of the class. We also studied how to select and breed for certain traits, the heritability and repeatability of traits, population genetics and how they are used in the food animal industry, qualitative and quantitative traits and how to select for them, selection of traits to either improve or change certain qualities, multiple trait selection, Mendelian genetics (similar to above, which was the introduction/first third of the class), and how this all is applied to different industries.

The class was "Principles of Breeding and Genetics", but it was more like "Principles of Genetics, Selection, and Mating"

And two white people can have black children also.

That absolutely impossible. The whitest the child can be is 50% given that both parents had white ancestor and it was one hell of a recessive gene, at least if you're taking about the "race".

to go even further, since it was such a large litter with every single pup being black (and i'm assuming the joke in the picture means that the father was brown), the genotypes would have to be bbEE for the father and BBee for the mother

Did they only have yellow pups? Either way it means that the chocolate lab's genes were bbEe and the black lab's genes were B _ Ee, and the (yellow) pups inherited an "e" from each parent.

I'm not too fussed about killing the joke, I thought it was some useful information to know. There are other colorations, such as silver, that are possible- but I don't know much about them, other than they are usually more difficult to breed.
