I was in the Vet Tech program at my college and we had a section in lab animal lab about rats.
we got to raise them from babies and inject them in different muscles with saline or tranquilizer and collect blood and gavage them.
and it was actually pretty humane, and we got to adopt them (rabbits, rats or mice) for free at the end of their respective section

pic related, its my lab rat Persephone

"We owe our understanding of biology to lab rats, they helped us understand ourselves, improve our health and extend our lives. But now, scientists want to make lab testing in animal models something from the past by creating computerized models.

To honor their contribution to science, this monument was created to commemorate lab rats used for DNA research, Novosibirsk, Russia"

This monument stands in Akademgorodok which is a sector in Novosibirsk. I know this because I grew up there and lived there until I was 15 years of age. The monument was put up last week I think.

My mom was a biologist in Russia and early in her career her job was to remove brains of rats they gave cancer to and slice them up microscopically.
They killed a lot of rats...

Just pitching in on the topic.

I wish there was more goofy **** like that in the US.

I mean, why can't we control the Statue of Liberty with an NES Advantage? I think that **** would be even sicker than a lab rat.
